Middlebury firefighters eye $5.2M project

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department is proposing a $5.2 million makeover of its Seymour Street and East Middlebury stations, a plan that could go to the voters as soon as next March.

Members of the Middlebury Fire Station Committee outlined their preliminary plans to the town selectboard on Tuesday, calling for the replacement of the East Middlebury station with a slightly smaller, more energy efficient structure, and an expansion/renovation of the Seymour Street facility.

County readies for big display of parades on Memorial Day

ADDISON COUNTY — On this Memorial Day Weekend, locals will get plenty of chances to remember the sacrifices of the women and men who died in service to our country and to feel the first thrills of summer in parades around the county.

Look for parades in Orwell, Middlebury, Vergennes and Bristol this weekend. There will also be readings of patriotic and nostalgic verse and plenty of men and women in uniform to go up and thank.

Local horror movie showcases film tricks

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury filmmaker Tim Joy is living proof that a guy can fulfill his boyhood dreams. He makes movies with a high-tech, radio-controlled helicopter and pulls off stunts with actual vehicles rigged to steer using an external device.

Ferrisburgh eyeing community rec center

A group of residents and Ferrisburgh Central School officials is working to create both a year-round town recreation center on school property and a bicycle and pedestrian path that could link neighborhoods to the school.

Tim Bicknell, an FCS board member and a physician with a practice in Vergennes, has helped lead an effort that has included three meetings to discuss design and funding ideas.

WWII vet Richard Poquette to lead Memorial Day parade

VERGENNES — The annual Memorial Day parade in Vergennes is a tradition that honors the men and women of the armed forces who died overseas in service of America.

This year the parade marshal will be longtime resident and World War II veteran Richard Poquette.

Like many of his generation, the Vermont native was swept up by the monumental events that rocked the globe. He answered the call and served his country in some of the biggest battles in both the European and Pacific theaters of World War II.

FERRISBURGH — Last Wednesday morning, some 100 students and adults wearing traditional cone-shaped hats stood ankle-deep in a flooded rice paddy pushing delicate yellow sprouts into the clay soil.

No, this wasn’t a tableau from Southeast Asia — it was right here in Addison County at Ferrisburgh’s Boundbrook Farm.

Joselson leaves mark with service to families

MIDDLEBURY — One of Middlebury’s most active volunteers for child and teen causes is reducing that role in order to take on a leadership position within the legal community.

Emily Joselson, a local attorney, is stepping down from the boards of both the Addison County Parent-Child Center and Addison Central Teens (ACT) after a combined total of more than 35 years of service that saw seismic growth and change within those organizations.

MUHS board discusses new turf sports field

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 school board last week began to discuss the concept of installing a turf field at Middlebury Union High School.

At the same May 17 meeting the board agreed to open the boys’ and girls’ ice hockey programs to a limited number of players from other schools.

School board members last Tuesday were told that a turf field at the high school would provide a more stable, weather-friendly surface for multiple MUHS sports teams.
