Ferrisburgh backs Central School spending plan on second try

FERRISBURGH — In a second 2015 vote on a Ferrisburgh Central School budget, Ferrisburgh voters on Tuesday approved two spending articles totaling $3,592,402 for the 2015-2016 school year. The result will be an increase of about 2 percent over current FCS spending.

Because a second Vergennes Union High School budget proposal was defeated on Tuesday, 722-676, despite support in Ferrisburgh, the tax impact of Tuesday’s vote is difficult to assess.

Burning permits banned in Vermont amid dry, warm weather

VERMONT — After a warm, dry weekend and a Red Flag Warning on Monday that ended with more than 25 new reports of wildfires, the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation (FPR) on Tuesday ordered the state’s forest fire wardens to cease issuing burning permits through May 19.

Gratton takes helm as county defender

MIDDLEBURY — There’s a lot of work and a sense of mystery associated with being Addison County’s public defender, and James Gratton embraces both facets of the job.

“I like the challenge of working with people,” Gratton said. “I like the fact that I never know when I come in in the morning what’s going to happen. I might be doing a motion that I wasn’t expecting, I might be getting through the paperwork that’s on my desk, for once.

That’s the approach to sentencing that U.S. District Judge William K. Sessions III has taken throughout his 20 years on the federal bench. It’s a role the longtime Cornwall resident, of course, takes very seriously.

Ending generational poverty by empowering girls

Since 2009, the Mariposa DR Foundation has been dedicated to finding sustainable solutions to end generational poverty in the Dominican Republic’s north coast, largely by focusing on educating and empowering girls. The foundation seeks to give Dominican girls the education, skills and self-confidence to pursue a path of their choosing.

New season of Arts Walks kicks off Friday in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Arts Walk kicks off its seventh season on Friday, May 8, from 5-7 p.m., turning the downtown and historic Marble Works into a center for art, music, food and fun. Participating businesses remain open late, becoming galleries displaying the work of area artists. Art will turn up in restaurants, on the town green, in stores and in other exciting and unlikely places. Many of the venues will display their participating artist throughout the month.

College observatory open to public this weekend

MIDDLEBURY — The Physics Department at Middlebury College is again hosting an open house night at the college observatory this spring. The observatory, located atop McCardell Bicentennial Hall, will be open to the public for viewing the heavens on Friday evening, May 8, from 9 until 10:30 p.m., provided the skies are mostly clear.

Records, fun mark 7th Maple Run

MIDDLEBURY — Two course records were set at the seventh annual Middlebury Maple Run this past Sunday as the 700-plus runners complete the 13.1-mile course under sunny skies, a brisk south wind, and temperatures that started in the mid-50s and rose to the mid-70s by midday. While the temperatures were ideal, the brisk headwinds from the south presented some challenge to runners along the exposed Sheep Farm Road in Weybridge and along South Street for miles 9 through 11, before being a tailwind for the last two-miles of the race.
