FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh town attorney has sent a certified letter to the owners of the Vorsteveld Farm threatening legal action “for the cutting of shade trees within the public right of way of Arnold Bay Road without prior approval,” unless the Vorstevelds respond to the letter by Jan. 1.

In the Nov. 22 letter, attorney James Carroll wrote, “I further ask that you ask your attorney or any identified insurance claims representative to contact me to discuss the contents of this letter and a possible resolution of this matter.”

Bank offers Printer's Alley property to Middlebury

Posted on December 4, 2017 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectboard last Tuesday agreed to consider an offer by the National Bank of Middlebury to convey to the town (at no charge) Printer’s Alley.

Printer’s Alley was closed to one-way vehicle traffic this past spring when a temporary bridge was installed on Main Street. The alley has remained open to pedestrian traffic.

Electric company seeks 5 percent rate hike

Posted on December 4, 2017 |
By Mike Polhamus of VTDigger.org

VERMONT — Green Mountain Power’s electric rates are slated to rise by 5 percent in 2018 if the Public Utility Commission approves a deal the state’s largest utility reached this month with the Vermont Department of Public Service.

The deal incorporates approximately $18 million due to GMP customers as a result of terms the company agreed to when it purchased Central Vermont Public Service Corp. in 2012.

The proposed 5 percent rate increase is somewhat lower than it would have been without that sum, said Kristin Carlson, a GMP vice president.

By Judith Irven

sleeping beauty.jpg

By now winter has settled in across the north-country and a light snow covers my Goshen garden. I know it will be six more months before the snowdrops and daffodils pop up to announce the arrival of spring.

During the warmer months of the year our gardens, brimming with colorful flowers and abundant vegetables, are surely beautiful. And of course, from spring until fall, a host of different gardening activities beckon us outside — there are seeds to plant, weeds to pull, vegetables to harvest and so much more.

Homeless facing wage shortfall: Most work, but high cost of shelter, child care challenging

Posted on November 30, 2017 |

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s easy to assume the typical homeless person is unemployed and therefore unable to afford a roof and four walls.
