The availability of digital content has made it easy to forget how pleasurable it can be to pick up a good book or newspaper and get lost in a story. In fact, a 2015 Huffington Post/YouGov poll of 1,000 adults in the United States found that 28 percent hadn’t read a single book in the previous 12 months.

BRISTOL — The following arms-length real estate sales were recorded in Bristol during 2017. It should be noted that due to changes in Vermont property-transfer forms, only one buyer and seller are listed in most transactions:

•  Jan. 20: Einar Swanson Estate to Robert Anderson, a home on 0.36 acres at 50 West Pleasant St., $189,500.

•  Jan. 30: Mark Skeffington to Matthew Baron, a home on 2.34 acres at 35 Vincent Drive, $267,000.

AgeWell offering beneficial tai chi classes at St. Peter's in Vergennes

VERGENNES — Age Well, formerly CVAA Champlain Valley Agency on Aging, is offering free classes in Sun Style Tai Chi in Vergennes at St. Peter’s Parish Hall. Both a beginner and an advanced class will be offered every Monday and Wednesday starting Jan. 8 and continuing until April 11.

South Lake cleanup plan is coming together

ADDISON COUNTY — State water quality experts are nearing completion of their game plan for improving water quality in the South Lake Champlain basin, one of 15 designated watersheds statewide.

The plan’s key principle: “Protect the best, and restore the rest.”

“That’s a really easy way to look at the scope of work. Protect the best. Maintain, restore, enhance the rest. The basin plans try to identify those opportunities,” said Ethan Swift of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

Town offices see surge in visitors as many pay taxes early in light of new law

ADDISON COUNTY — In Ferrisburgh’s Route 7 town offices last week, longtime Assistant Town Clerk and Treasurer Pam Cousino shook her head about the unusual number of visitors and phone calls at a time when she and her co-workers probably had hoped to catch up on a few tasks.

“I thought it was supposed to be quiet this week,” Cousino said.

Shashok to take a pass on re-election to Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectboard Vice Chairwoman Susan Shashok confirmed on Tuesday she won’t seek another three-year term this March, while the panel’s newest member, Farhad Kahn, said he would run for the post to which he was appointed last March.

The two incumbents’ plans lend some clarity to a Middlebury election picture that will come into full focus on Monday, Jan. 29, the date by which candidates for various municipal and school offices must hand in their petition papers to the town clerk’s office.
