Nov. 11 craft fair to benefit Mount Abe Project Graduation

BRISTOL — As its sole fundraiser of the year, Mt. Abraham’s Project Graduation will hold a craft fair at MAUHS on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mt.  Abraham introduced Project Graduation — a substance free graduation celebration — to the state of Vermont in 1987 by traveling to other Vermont high schools and informing senior classes about the importance of a substance free celebration and the opportunities that existed.

Rifle season for deer starts Nov. 11

MONTPELIER — Hunters are gearing up for the start of Vermont’s traditionally popular 16-day rifle deer season that begins Saturday, Nov. 11 and ends Sunday, Nov. 26.

A hunter may take one buck during this season with at least one antler having two or more points one inch or longer. A point must be one inch or longer from base to tip.  The main beam counts as a point, regardless of length. Spike-antlered deer, mostly yearlings, are protected during this season.

College to host international trade symposium Nov. 10

MIDDLEBURY — On the afternoon of Friday, Nov. 10, Middlebury College’s Program in International Politics and Economics will convene a symposium on “The United States and Global Trade: Winners, Losers and the Way Forward.”

The public is invited to come hear three guest speakers address different aspects of the symposium’s general theme, which is now so central to our national politics.

VUES to hold Dec. 2 Holiday Fair

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union Elementary School will hold its 17th annual Holiday Fair on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 9 .m. to 3:30 p.m. at the school on 43 East St. The fair, which has vendors of all stripes from ceramics to soap, will benefit the VUES after school fusion program. More than 60 booths will be showing off their wares, with items for those into specialty foods, jewelry, and handcrafted items like handmade pens, socks, quilts. Blacksmiths, photographers and woodworkers will also be present, among others.

Lottery tickets festoon Brandon Lions Club Holiday Wreath

BRANDON — The Brandon-Forestdale Lions Club is raffling a 2017 Holiday Wreath filled with $200 worth of Vermont Scratch-off Lottery tickets.

Designed as a fundraiser, with all proceeds earmarked for local projects, Club President Patti Reynolds says the winner of the raffle has the potential of winning over $800,000. The wreath holds scratch-off tickets in a variety of denominations from $2 to $20.

Tickets are available from any Brandon-Forestdale Lions Club member at a price of $5 each, or three for $10. The winner will be chosen on Dec. 19.

Editorial: Why a 'No' vote on pipeline easement hurts Middlebury

Just another day in a year of strange weather

ADDISON COUNTY — Those who wonder if this past Monday morning’s freak windstorm was unusual or just the latest extreme weather in Addison County this year have good reason to do so.

Consider the following:

•  The average temperature in October in Burlington through Oct. 30, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), was 58.6 degrees — 10.5 degrees warmer than typical and about 2 degrees warmer than the previous record for the month.

Wind knocks out power to thousands: Storm makes record impact on state

ADDISON COUNTY — Roughly one-third of Vermonters at least temporarily lost power due to the house-shaking, tree-felling windstorm late Sunday and early Monday as wind gusts around the county reached 80 mph, and winds topping 100 mph were reported on the state’s highest peaks.

The gale resulted in more outages across Vermont than any storm in history, including Tropical Storm Irene and the l998 ice storm, according to Green Mountain Power.
