Middlebury Police Log: Police investigate Agway theft

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated the reported theft of some clothing from Agway on Exchange Street on Dec. 18. Police said a couple allegedly filled a plastic tote bag with clothes and left the store through a side door. Store officials will soon provide police with in-house video of the man and woman, who are believed to have attempted the same type of theft from Agway on a previous occasion. Store officials are also tallying the value of the stolen clothes.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a report of an unwanted youth at the Addison County Teens drop-in center on Main Street on Dec. 12.

•  Assisted a New Jersey motorist who had struck a deer on Route 7 North on Dec. 12. Police said the vehicle sustained damage to its front end, though the passenger was not injured. The status of the deer is unknown.

•  Received into evidence the contents of a wallet that had been found at the side of Munger Street on Dec. 13.

•  Assisted Middlebury Union High School officials in dealing with an out-of-control student on Dec. 13. Police said the student was suspended from school and released to a parent.

•  Responded to a reported death at a Danyow Drive residence on Dec. 13. Police said George Martino, 94, had died of natural causes.

•  Assisted a Green Mountain Place family with an out-of-control daughter on Dec. 13.

•  Responded to a noise complaint at a Jayne Court residence on Dec. 14.

•  Assisted Porter Hospital officials with an unruly patient on Dec. 14. Police said the patient became so combative that she had to be placed in wrist restraints.

•  Assisted in mediating a dispute between two MUHSstudents who had been arguing on Dec. 14.

•  Served a temporary restraining order on a local man on Dec. 14.

•  Responded to a report of a man trying to use a fake identification card at Hannaford Supermarket on Route 7 South on Dec. 14.

•  Received a report about a 14-year-old student being in possession of cigarettes at Middlebury Union Middle School on Dec. 15.

•  Responded to a noise complaint at a Washington Street Extension residence on Dec. 16.

•  Escorted an unwanted student from MUHS grounds on Dec. 16.

•  Were informed of the theft of an iPad from the Ilsley Library on Main Street on Dec. 16.

•  Responded to a domestic dispute on Main Street on Dec. 16. Police said they separated the two parties, both of whom were intoxicated.

•  Assisted a local woman who was having some problems with an uncooperative ex-boyfriend on Dec. 17.

•  Cited Taylor J. Bennett, 25, of New Haven for driving under the influence (second offense), following a stop for speeding on Court Street on Dec. 18. Police said they measured Bennett’s blood-alcohol level at 0.08 percent — the legal limit for driving.

•  Located, and returned, a runaway youth to a Jackson Lane home on Dec. 18.

•  Responded to a report of a young woman panhandling in The Centre shopping center parking lot on Dec. 18.

•  Assisted the Middlebury Fire Department with a transformer fire at the Chateau on Middlebury College campus on Dec. 18.
