Middlebury Police Log: Police investigate empty boat in creek

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police recovered an empty boat from the Otter Creek off Bakery Lane on Jan. 23.

Police received a call about a boat stuck on some ice in the creek, about 100 yards upstream from Mister Up’s Restaurant. Middlebury Fire Department Technical Rescue went out and retrieved the boat and also checked near the Otter Creek Falls for any evidence that people might have been on board and fallen into the water.

Police found the owner of the boat, who said it should not have been in the creek. Authorities also checked to make sure there were no people missing from area schools or homes.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•Destroyed a syringe that a person had found off Weybridge Street on Jan. 23.

•Cited Gary G. Sears, 45, of Middlebury for domestic assault following an incident at a John Graham Court residence on Jan. 23.

•Ticketed a youth for being a minor in possession of tobacco and under the influence of alcohol on Jan. 23. Police said the teen’s mom turned her in.

•Searched a room at the Blue Spruce Motel that a witness alleged had been occupied by a couple handling illegal drugs on Jan. 23. A police search of the room did not reveal any drugs, but the matter remains under investigation.

•Served a no-trespass order on a man on Jan. 25 who was not wanted at the Middlebury Village Depot on Court Street.

•Cited Adrian A. Moore, 20, of Middlebury for unlawful trespass at Shaw’s Supermarket on Washington Street on Jan. 25.

•Served a temporary restraining order on a local man on Jan. 25.

•Were informed of the theft of a blue jacket from Skihaus on Merchants Row on Jan. 25. Store workers have identified a suspect in the case.

•Received a report that a woman’s wallet had been stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked on East Main Street on Jan. 25.

•Investigated a truancy case at Middlebury Union Middle School on Jan. 25.

•Responded to a report that some prescription drugs had been stolen from a local resident on Jan. 25.

•Cited Adrian Moore, 20, of Middlebury for petit larceny and resisting arrest, after he allegedly stole an iPad from Ilsley Public Library on Main Street on Jan. 25. Police tracked him to McDonald’s Restaurant using the GPS signal from the iPad, a chase ensued, and police apprehended Moore. He was also cited for the theft from Skihaus earlier in the day.

•Investigated a one-vehicle crash, with injuries, at the intersection of Weybridge and Academy streets on Jan. 26.

•Responded to an untimely death report at a Halladay Road home on Jan. 26. Police said Gaston L. Bilodeau, 82, died of natural causes.

•Ticketed a local youth for being a minor in possession of tobacco in the Creek Road area on Jan. 26.

•Ticketed a girl for trying to use a fake identification card to make a purchase at Hannaford Supermarket on Route 7 South on Jan. 26.

•Took, to Rutland Regional Medical Center, a very drunk local woman. Police said they measured the woman’s blood-alcohol content at 0.361 percent. As a point of reference, the legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.

•Were informed of the theft of cash from Video King on Washington Street on Jan. 27. Police said the cash had been stolen from the cash register.

•Warned a female student to stop threatening another female student at Middlebury Union High School on Jan. 27.

•Responded to a one-vehicle crash on Mead Lane on Jan. 27. Police said the driver crashed into a rock and sustained some facial injuries.

•Responded to a report of an out-of-control man threatening people at the Congregational Church of Middlebury on Jan. 27. Police said they took the man to Porter Hospital for psychological evaluation.

•Were informed of the theft of a man’s Trek bike from the Court Street area on Jan. 28.

•Cited Gary G. Sears, 45, of Middlebury for violation of an abuse prevention order on Jan. 28.

•Responded to a noise complaint at a South Pleasant Street residence on Jan. 28.

•Served a no-trespass order on a couple who were not wanted at a Foster Circle property on Jan. 28.

•Cited Scott A. Castle, 40, of Shelburne for retail theft, in connection with an alleged shoplifting incident at Shaw’s Supermarket on Washington Street on Jan. 28.

•Connected a suicidal woman with counseling services at Porter Hospital on Jan. 29.

•Ticketed a youth for being a minor in possession of tobacco at Shaw’s Supermarket on Jan. 29.

•Asked some unwanted people to leave the Blue Spruce Motel on Route 7 South on Jan. 29.
