VERGENNES — The Vergennes Police Department canine twice recently alerted on the presence of drugs in vehicles, and citations were issued as a result, Vergennes police said.

On July 30 in Vergennes police saw a car being fueled at a city gas station by a man they said they knew had a suspended license. Police said the operator and a passenger seemed impaired, and they obtained permission to search the car after the dog alerted on it.

Police allege they found a small amount of marijuana and paraphernalia, and cited the driver, Derrick Cusson-St. George, 26, of Charlotte for driving with a suspended license and issued him a city ticket for paraphernalia. They also cited a passenger, Mark Kennedy, 25, of Vergennes, for marijuana possession and ticketed him for paraphernalia possession.

On Aug. 2 Bristol police called the Vergennes police Drug Recognition Expert to evaluate a driver involved with an accident at the intersection of Routes 116 and 17. A separate unit with the dog also responded, as did a Middlebury unit.
