MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police assisted a Schoolhouse Hill Road resident who reported hearing “footsteps” in her back yard on Oct. 8. Two police officers checked the exterior of the home and heard a moaning sound in the woods nearby. Police went to the sound of the moaning and found a moose that is suspected to have been the source of the scary footsteps.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Investigated a witness’s report of a man and woman using needles to administer drugs while parked in The Centre shopping plaza on Oct. 7. Police searched the area and seized some drugs. The matter remains under investigation.

•  Were informed of the theft of a sign from Noonie Deli in the Marble Works plaza on Oct. 7.

•  Received a report that someone had damaged, and taken gas from, a boat parked at a Munson Road residence on Oct. 7.

•  Investigated a truancy complaint at Middlebury Union High School on Oct. 7.

•  Received a report that two skirts had been stolen from the Wild Mountain Thyme store on Main Street on Oct. 8.

•  Investigated a report of several juveniles breaking sticks and being rough with equipment at the municipal tennis courts off Schoolhouse Hill Road on Oct. 8. Police said the youths had left the park upon their arrival.

•  Responded to a report of two MUHS students fighting in front of the school at dismissal time on Oct. 8. Police said there were no injuries and the students apologized. The matter will be handled within the school, according to police.

•  Were informed of the theft of a bike from the Exchange Street area on Oct. 8. The bike is described as being a green “Giant” hybrid model, with two stainless steel baskets attached to the rear of the bike.

•  Served a no-trespass order on an MUHS student who had allegedly been involved in a confrontation with an MUHS staff member on campus on Oct. 8.

•  Responded to a reported home invasion at Fred Johnson Circle residence on Oct. 8. Police said the homeowner and her child had locked themselves inside a room after hearing some strange noises. Police checked the outside and inside of the home and found no intruder(s). Police told the woman about an abundance of wildlife in the area and asked her to call again in the event of another suspected break-in.

•  Were informed that an MUHS student had been smoking marijuana on campus on Oct. 9. Police continue to investigate the matter.

•  Served court diversion paperwork on a minor found in possession of marijuana and alcohol, following a stop for speeding on Court Street on Oct. 10.

•  Were informed that a woman had overdosed on drugs and alcohol at a Jayne Court residence on Oct. 10. Police said the woman was taken to Porter Hospital.

•  Responded to a report on Oct. 10 of a fox — possibly sick, rabid or injured — in the Case Street/Munson Road area on Oct. 10. Police said they could not locate the fox.

•  Interviewed a person on Oct. 10 who claimed to have been struck by a vehicle while walking in the crosswalk on Main Street at the intersection with Merchants Row on Oct. 7. The victim, who sustained a minor injury, told police the vehicle did not stop after the incident.

•  Cited Karen Douse, 53, of New Haven for driving under the influence, following a stop for failing to use a turn signal on Elm Street on Oct. 10.

•  Responded to a report of a suspected drunk driver on Route 7 South on Oct. 11. Turns out the driver was tired and not drunk, according to police.

•  Assisted Porter Hospital officials with an intoxicated female patient on Oct. 11.

•  Responded to a report of a domestic dispute at a South Village Green residence on Oct. 11. Police determined no assault had taken place, but noted the man who had been involved in the dispute had left the residence with three young children, two of whom had not been properly restrained in the vehicle. Police forwarded that information to Brandon police, where the vehicle was headed.

•  Received a report of a local woman with a self-inflicted stab wound on Oct. 11. Police said the woman was taken to Porter Hospital.

•  Cited Jacob McDowell, 23, of Weybridge for driving under the influence on Oct. 11, after he was stopped on Weybridge Street for not having rear license plate lights.

•  Investigated a report of someone allegedly shooting at an animal from the side of Creek Road on Oct. 12. A witness told police the shooter was in a silver Chevy Cavalier, but authorities could find no such vehicle in the area.

•  Warned a Weybridge Street tenant who had been violating the town’s noise ordinance during the early morning of Oct. 12.

•  Warned a person for violating the town’s open container ordinance on Shannon Street on Oct. 12.

•  Were informed of the theft of a bike from outside of Middlebury College’s Atwater dormitory off Freeman Way on Oct. 13.

•  Cited Connor C. Young, 19, of Sudbury, Mass., for driving under the influence, after investigating a report of a vehicle driving off Old Chapel Road on Oct. 13.

•  Cited Tara Dugan, 22, of Ripton for driving under the influence, after she was allegedly seen driving in the breakdown lane on Middle Road on Oct. 13.

•  Issued court diversion paperwork to a youth seen carrying an open beer in the Shannon Street area on Oct. 13. Police said the youth was also warned about violating the town’s open container law.

•  Quieted a loud party at a Seymour Street Extension residence on Oct. 13.
