Middlebury College announces second wave of budget cuts

Ron Liebowitz, the president of Middlebury College, announced the school's second wave of budget cuts in the wee hours of the morning today — cuts the college hopes will bring the school closer to its goal of trimming $20 million from the spending plan. At first glance, it looks like the arts might have taken the hardest hit. The Museum of Art will need to cut its budget by 10 percent — and the New England Review, the college-affiliated, and highly prestigious, literary magazine is in danger of losing its funding altogether if its doesn't eliminate its operating deficit by 2011. The college is making the cuts in the to try to offset dwindling donations and the $300 million hit that the school's endowment has taken in the economic downturn. To see Liebowitz's memo, which went to students, faculty and staff by e-mail, dart over to the college's <a href="http://www.middlebury.edu/administration/budget/challenge/boc_memo_05120... site</a href>.
