VERGENNES — Vergennes police early on Saturday morning reluctantly cited a woman for petit larceny for stealing potted flowers from a White Street resident’s porch, an action taken on their second visit to the scene.

The first call came just before midnight on Friday, when a White Street resident said a woman started walking off his porch with a potted plant, refused his request not to do so, and then went into a neighboring home.

The man called police, who knocked on the door of the home the woman had entered, but police said no one came to the door. The man called back later and said he noticed more plants were missing, and police said this time the woman answered the door, but denied taking the plants. However, Vergennes police said, there was a trail of flower petals leading to her door.

Police said they preferred not to write a citation for the thefts, and would not do so if she would return the plants. However, the woman, who police at this point described as intoxicated, started becoming combative. Police then cited Amber Cornet, 40, who has a Brandon address, for petit larceny.

In other incidents between May 25 and 31, Vergennes police:

• On May 25 ticketed Katherine Moore, 25, of Brandon on West Main Street for possession of marijuana and failure to stop at a Stop sign.

• On May 26 helped Vermont State Police by responding to the Whispering Pines Campground in Panton, where a teenager had allegedly thrown a knife at her mother. VSP are investigating the incident.

• On May 27 ticketed a Vergennes Union High School student for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.

• On May 28 contacted the owner of an unlocked Main Street business.

• On May 28 checked out the report that a window screen at the post office had been cut, apparently in an attempt to gain entry.

• On May 28 concluded that an untimely death on School Street was due to natural causes.

• On May 28 told the owners of cars parking on newly seeded lawn in Falls Park to stop doing so.

• On May 28 identified a juvenile at a Main Street apartment building for the Department for Children and Families.

• On May 29 cited Andrew Legault, 27, of Fairfax for driving an unregistered and unlicensed vehicle, driving with unassigned plates, and driving too fast for conditions near the intersection of Routes 7 and 22A.

• On May 29 cited John Cunningham, 41, of Bristol for driving with a criminally suspended license after stopping him on Main Street for using a cell phone while driving.

• On May 30 cited Kody J. Ploof for a felony count of unlawful mischief for allegedly punching a pickup truck and doing $1,000 of damage. Police said a witness estimated Ploof punched the truck about 30 times. Ploof told police he was upset because a woman punched him in the face in the City Limits parking lot, and police said they are investigating that allegation. Police also took Ploof to the Act 1 detox center in Burlington.

• On May 30 dealt with a minor two-car accident on South Water Street.

• On May 30 were told that a man walking his dog on South Water Street had been confronted by an unleashed dog, a situation the man said was ongoing.

• On May 30 heard from a man who came into the station that a woman was not cooperating with the custody arrangement for their children. Police called the woman and heard a similar story, and referred both to Family Court if they were having trouble with the existing arrangement.

• On May 30 helped VSP with an arrest in New Haven.
