VERGENNES — Vergennes police between Sept. 18 and 24 dealt with a variety of incidents, including child custody disputes, driving under the influence of alcohol, two issues at Vergennes Union High School, an arrest on an outstanding warrant, and a runaway juvenile.

City police also continued to run a number of patrols in areas from which they have received citizen complaints about speeding, including during that seven-day span on Hopkins Road and Main Street.

In that week, Vergennes police:

•  On Sept. 18 tried unsuccessfully to find a city resident on behalf of New York State Police; police said the resident had left a car in a New York police lot.

•  On Sept. 18 told a woman who thought she might have bought a stolen car that her paperwork was all in order.

•  On Sept. 19 helped Vermont State Police and Fish & Wildlife officials deal with a Route 7 crash near the city in which a vehicle struck and killed a deer.

•  On Sept. 19 dealt with a tobacco violation at VUHS.

•  On Sept. 19 handled a minor two-car crash on South Water Street.

•  On Sept. 20 were told a man was rummaging through a car on Macdonough Drive; he was gone when police arrived.

•  On Sept. 20 helped state police process a driving under the influence case at the city station.

•  On Sept. 20 helped a runaway with a New York City address who came to the city station; police notified New York State Police and child welfare advocates.

•  On Sept. 21 helped a motorist get into a locked vehicle.

•  On Sept. 21 went to Thomas Circle when a resident said someone knocked on the outside walls of a home; police found no one.

•  On Sept. 22 at about 12:30 a.m. asked noisy skateboarders to leave the Vergennes Union Elementary School area.

•  On Sept. 22 took a report of a fender-bender at Basin Harbor Club for insurance purposes.

•  On Sept. 22 cited Matthew Davis, 24, of Burlington for violating a relief-from-abuse order.

•  On Sept. 22 went to VUHS to help handle a complaint of a student stealing a teacher’s keys; police said the student wanted to get into the gym and the situation was handled by the school administration.

•  On Sept. 23 cited Michael McLeaf, 53, of Middlebury for DUI after stopping his vehicle for failing to honor a Green Street stop sign. Police alleged he failed a roadside sobriety test, that they confiscated a marijuana pipe from him, and his preliminary blood-alcohol test read in excess of the legal limit. They cited him, although his evidentiary test taken back at the station read at 0.063, below the legal limit of 0.08.

•  On Sept. 23 and 24 went to the same First Street home to calm a child custody dispute.

•  On Sept. 23 helped state police at a Ferrisburgh accident.

•  On Sept. 23 arrested Mark K. Kennedy, 30, of Burlington on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear for a status conference at a Chittenden County court. Police stopped Kennedy’s vehicle on Green Street for defective equipment and allege they also found paraphernalia and a small amount of marijuana, both of which they destroyed. Police lodged Kennedy at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility.

•  On Sept. 24 ticketed two residents of a Main Street apartment for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia and informed the Department for Children and Families that the residents had allegedly used drugs in front of children.
