MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on Oct. 3 were informed of the theft of several hemp plants from a field off Quarry Road.

Several Addison County farms have received permission to grow hemp, which can be used to make paper, clothing, rope and a variety of other utilitarian products.

But while hemp is a close cousin to the marijuana plant, it doesn’t include enough of the THC chemical (that is present in pot) to produce a high if smoked or ingested.

There have been several Vermont State Police reports in recent weeks of people statewide stealing hemp plants, ostensibly thinking they were pilfering marijuana.

There were also two separate reports last month from Middlebury Police concerning the theft of marijuana plants growing on private property. It is now legal for Vermonters to be in possession of up to an ounce of marijuana and have up to two mature pot plants growing on their property.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Assisted a Court Street family with a drunken family member on Oct. 1.

•  Interviewed a South Street Extension resident on Oct. 2 who was concerned some items might have been stolen from her home.

•  Received a report on Oct. 2 from the Vermont Department for Children & Families about a sexual assault that authorities said may have taken place in the Skyline Lane area.

•  Were informed of the theft of some furniture from an unlocked garage on North Pleasant Street on Oct. 2.

•  Received a report on Oct. 2 from a Middlebury Union High School student alleging $200 had been stolen from the boys’ locker room.

•  Responded, along with Middlebury firefighters, to a barn fire at 178 Painter Road on Oct. 3. Police said the blaze was quickly extinguished and no people or animals were injured.

•  Responded to a report of a person having mental health issues in the Birchard Park neighborhood on Oct. 3.

•  Responded to a report of a child choking at an East Main Street residence on Oct. 4. Police said someone had dislodged the food from the child’s throat prior to the arrival of Middlebury Regional EMS officials.

•  Helped Mary Hogan Elementary School officials with a troubled youth on campus on Oct. 4.

•  Responded to a report of a vehicle leaving the scene of an accident on Middle Road on Oct. 4.

•  Assisted Middlebury Union Middle School officials in interviewing a student discovered with what police simply described as “a substance” on campus on Oct. 4.

•  Received a report about a vehicle leaving the scene of an accident on Charles Avenue on Oct. 4.

•  Investigated a child custody dispute in the Court Street Extension area on Oct. 5.

•  Received a report of an alleged sexual offense committed in the Valley View neighborhood on Oct. 5.

•  Were alerted to a person who was reported to be unresponsive in the Seymour Street area on Oct. 5. Turns out the person was sleeping, according to police.

•  Arrested Marsha Barber, 59, of Rutland on an outstanding warrant out of Rutland County on Oct. 7. Police said they located Barber on the town green. An Addison County Sheriff’s Department deputy took Barber to the Marble Valley Correctional Facility, according to police.
