EMERY BOOSKA

MILTON, N.H. — Emery Pierre Booska, 80, of Milton, N.H., passed away on Jan. 12, 2014. He was born in Bristol, Vt., on Oct. 19, 1933, the son of Carl P. and Gertrude A. (Gebo) Booska. Emery grew up in Orwell, Vt., and graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1951. He went on to earn a B.S. in Agricultural Science from the University of Vermont in 1956. Emery continued his education at the University of New Hampshire attaining an M.S. in Agricultural Education in 1967.

CONSTANCE TOMAINO

ORWELL, Vt./COLONIAL BEACH, Va. — Constance “Connie” Tomaino, 91, formerly of Orwell, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, after a brief illness.

She was born May 14, 1922, in Westfield, Pa., the daughter of Roy and Edith Wilbur Clow. She married Joseph Tomaino in 1942 and the two resided in Orwell for over 40 years. Following the death of her husband in 2012, she moved to Colonial Beach, Va., to be close to her daughter, Rosan.

RUTH HELEN WALLACE COATES

BRISTOL — Ruth Helen Wallace Coates, 92, passed away on Jan. 10, 2014, in her home embraced by loved ones.

Ruth was born in Bristol on Sept. 23, 1921, the daughter of Francis and Julia (O’Bryan) Kilbourn. She graduated from Bristol High School and Lasell Junior College where she majored in merchandising. Ruth married Albert D. Wallace in December 1943, and later in 1982 married Hugh Coates.

GEORGE DONALD JOHNSTON, JR.

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Don Johnston (George Donald Johnston, Jr.), 86, of Vero Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully on January 3, 2014. He was born to the late Isabella and George D. Johnston, Sr., on March 9, 1927, in Elmira, NY.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Europe during World War II. Don had a B.A. in Journalism and Economics from Michigan State University; an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS); and attended Harvard Business School’s 61st Advanced Management Program.

HUGH CLARK

TAMPA, Fla. — Hugh Stickle Clark, 85, of Tampa, Fla., died on Dec. 20, 2013, after a two-year battle with cancer.

He was born July 25, 1928, to parents Erwin S. and Geraldine (Lyon) Clark of Addison, Vt., where he attended Addison grade schools and graduated in 1945 from Vergennes High School.

JOHN WADE HAMPTON

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — John Wade Hampton, 49, of Middletown, Conn., formerly of Old Lyme, Conn., Middlebury, Vt., and Merrick, N.Y., died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at his home in Middletown.

He was born in Freeport, N.Y., on April 5, 1964. He was the son of Mason L. Hampton Jr. and Carolyn Jean Hampton. He was raised in Merrick, N.Y., and fell in love with photography at a young age. He won numerous awards for his photography including a full-tuition scholarship to the School of Visual Arts in New York City, which he attended.

CLESSON “TEDDY” HAYES

FOREST DALE, Vt./ DADE CITY, Fla. — Clesson Edwin “Teddy” Hayes Jr., 75, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Pasco Regional Medical Center in Dade City, Fla. He was a former resident of Rutland Town, Vt.

He was born in Brandon, Vt., on April 25, 1938. He was the son of Clesson “Ted” Hayes Sr. and Ellen (Hayes) Hayes. He grew up in Forest Dale where he received his early education. He graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1958. He afterwards served in the United States Army as a member of the military police.

DARLENE MANNING

RUTLAND — Darlene Jean Manning, 62, of Rutland and formerly of Brandon, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, N.H.

She was born in Rutland on Sept. 17, 1951. She was the daughter of Charles Joseph and Betty Jean (Waite) Sargent. She received her early education in local Rutland schools and attended Middlebury High School.

JUDY ANN MARSHALL

MIDDLEBURY — Judy Ann Marshall passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, after a nearly yearlong battle with lung cancer, which she fought bravely.

BEULAH TORIAN

MIDDLEBURY — The Spirit we called Beulah E. Torian, after 93 years left her body, Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center where she had resided for the past year.

Born Sept. 20, 1920, in Montpelier, Idaho, she was the daughter of the late P.B. Edson Skiff and Helen M. (Gould) Skiff. 

Beulah was a graduate of Washington High School, Los Angeles, Calif., and Santa Barbara Teachers College, class of 1942. She lovingly shared her knowledge at Pacific Ackworth Friends School for many of her years spent as a teacher.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
