Roderick Murray

JEFERSONVILLE — Roderick Davis Murray, 60, of Jeffersonville died during the early hours of Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at the Fletcher Allen ICU following a short fight with an aggressive cancer.

There will be a memorial service for friends and family at the Middlebury Community House on March 21, 2010, at 2 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and/or the animal shelter of one’s choice.

He was born in Chicago, Ill., on Nov. 30, 1949, son of the late Dorcas (Pinkerton) Murray and Chandler Murray.

Beatrice Santerre

BRISTOL — Beatrice Butterfield Santerre, 87, died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at Charles and Alice Barnum’s home in New Haven.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Lincoln United Church, with interment in Maple Cemetery in Lincoln.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to United Church of Lincoln, 23 Quaker St., Lincoln, VT 05443.

She was born March 7, 1922, in Starksboro, the daughter of James and Zilpha Monroe Stokes.

F. Winston Swain

NEW HAVEN — F. Winston Swain, 89, of New Haven died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at Ringer Home Care in Vergennes.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, PO Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753, or the New Haven Fire Deptartment, New Haven, VT 05472.

He was born Jan. 23, 1920, in New Haven, the son of Quincy and Flora Ravlin Swain.

Edith Thompson

ORWELL — Edith Thompson, 97, died peacefully in her Orwell home on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010.

Donations may be made in her name to St. Stephen’s, or to the Orwell Free Library.

Family recalled her as an intellectual, an adventurer, and a lover of life. All kinds of people gravitated towards her during her long life — her circle of friends spanned generations and continents.

MIDDLEBURY — Robert L. Zern, 45, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010.

A private graveside service will be held in the spring.

He was born in Burlington on Sept. 23, 1964, the son of Lawrence W. and Ellen (Sears) Zern.

He was a graduate of Middlebury Union High School. He was employed at r.k. Miles in Middlebury.

Teddy Stokes

SOUTH STARKSBORO — Teddy P. Stokes, 68, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at Birchwood Terrace Healthcare in Burlington.

He was born July 1, 1941, in Starksboro, the son of Samuel and Reatha (Hallock) Stokes.

He was a lifetime dairy farmer on the family farm in Starksboro, which has been in the Hallock family for many generations. In the 1960s, the farm was awarded a Century Farm Award.

Chauncey Burns

BURLINGTON — Chauncey Edward Burns, 86, of Burlington passed away Jan. 7, 2010, peacefully at home with his family following the complications of a stroke from over three years ago.

There will be no visiting hours.

Donations in his memory may be sent to the Chittenden County Humane Society.

The burial and service will be held in the spring in Underhill.

Alice Williams

LINCOLN — Alice F. Williams, 70, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home, 117 South Main St., Middlebury.

Visitation will be on Friday, Jan. 15, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Ira.

She was born July 23, 1939, in Middletown Springs, the daughter of the late Edgar and Violet (Coombs) Matteson.

Her family says she enjoyed quilting and watching game shows.

Marilyn Smith

SALISBURY — Marilyn E. Smith, 84, died peacefully Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, surrounded by her loving family, at the home of her daughter, Minda Bagley.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the West Addison Methodist Church. The Rev. Michael Doran will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Town Line Cemetery in Bridport.

There will be no visitation hours per her request.

Following the service a reception will be held at the West Addison Community House.

Bryanna Popp

BRANDON — Bryanna Lynn Popp, 3-1/2, the beloved daughter of Donovan and Kady Popp, fondly known as “Sissy,” passed away with her Papa, Kevin Flynn, and her aunt, Carrie Flynn, Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, in a snowmobile accident on Lake Dunmore in Salisbury.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Wednesday, Jan. 13, at St. Mary’s Church, Middlebury, with the Rev. William R. Beaudin, pastor, as celebrant. Spring burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Brandon.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
