ARTHUR CLIFFORD

STARKSBORO — A celebration of life for Arthur E. Clifford, 91, a lifelong Starksboro resident who died Friday, April 17, 2015, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, from 2-4 p.m. at the pond in Starksboro. 

RICHARD SWEARINGIN

EAST MIDDLEBURY — Richard “Buckeye” Swearingen, 86, died on August 4, 2015.

Born July 22, 1929, in Columbus, Ohio, he was the only son of Truman and Helen (Loechler) Swearingen. Richard moved to Panama in 1939 with his parents. He spent the next 41 years living in the Canal Zone, where he became a master electrician working for the Panama Canal Company. Richard retired from the PCC in 1980 and moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado, where he worked an additional 20 years at Colorado State University as an electrician.

Brendon Cousino, 30, native of Bristol

RICHMOND — Brendon P. Cousino, 30, of Richmond died tragically in an automobile accident on Thursday, July 30, 2015.

He was born in Bristol, Vt., on August 2, 1984, the son of Garry and Cynthia (Purinton) Cousino. He graduated from Mt. Abraham Union High School.

Stephanie Scott, 44, Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Stephanie Manning Scott of Middlebury and Colchester passed away unexpectedly on July 20, 2015. She was born in Middlebury on March 17, 1971, to Arthea Jimmo Leggett and Martin Manning.

Stephanie was a free spirit who loved spending time with her family, friends and two dogs Rudy and Roo. She felt best when she was helping others. She was an LNA for many years at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury and Birchwood Manor in Colchester.

Elinor Walker, 82, native of Middlebury

WATERBURY, Conn. — Elinor Brown Walker, 82, of Waterbury passed away on July 25, 2015, at Porter Hospital after a short illness. Born in 1932 in Middlebury, Vt., she was the daughter of Milton and Gladys Brown. Valedictorian of her Middlebury High School class, she graduated with honors in 1954 from Middlebury College.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Frederick William Walker II in 1983.

Mary Alice Rose memorial service

VERGENNES — A memorial service for Mary Alice Rose, who died at age 66 on Feb. 8, 2015, will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes and a reception will follow at Tony’s house.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, PO Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.

Donald Grace Sr., 80, Bristol

BRISTOL — Donald Grace Sr., 80, died on July 30, 2015, peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

He was a man with many talents and worked for the town of Bristol for many years. He loved hunting with his children and grandchildren.

Donald was predeceased by his parents, Alvina Mason (Dolly) and Stewart Grace; step-father Wendell Mason; three brothers, Roland, Laurence, and John Grace; and a foster son, David Wedge.

JANET BROWN

BRANDON — Janet Smith Brown, 81, died Monday, July 27, 2015, at her home in Brandon. She was born in Brandon on April 22, 1934.

She is survived by three children, three siblings, five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her husband, Francis “Bud” Brown, predeceased her on March 25, 2009.

The graveside committal service and burial took place on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at 10 a.m. at the Old Goshen Community Cemetery.

JOAN CUNNINGHAM

BENSON — Joan Carey Cunningham, 93, of Benson, Vt., died Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at her home with her family present.

Joan was born in Cambridge, Mass., Feb. 22, 1922, daughter of Arthur Graham Carey and Elisabeth Foster Millet.

She attended the University of Minnesota where she studied agriculture. Joan married Michael Cunningham, a graphic artist, from Rochester, N.Y., in 1944. In 1948, Joan and Michael realized a dream and created Trinity Farm where they managed a herd of registered Jersey cows.

MIDDLEBURY — A memorial service for Brett M. Emilo, 44, who passed away Friday, May 29, 2015, at his home in Montour Falls, N.Y., will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, at St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury. A reception following the burial will take place at the Middlebury Inn from 1-4 p.m. ◊

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
