DONALD BURCHARD

SALISBURY — A gathering “In Celebration of the Life” of Donald Burchard of Salisbury, who died Dec. 11, 2015, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016 at 11 a.m., at the Middlebury American Legion Post 27. Friends are invited to join the family in refreshments and a time of remembrance.

CHARLES A. BAUER JR.

CUMBERLAND, R.I. — Charles A. Bauer, Jr., 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at the Brookdale Senior Living Community in Cumberland, R.I., surrounded by his loving family. He and his late wife, Diane P. (Taylor) Bauer had 61 years of happy marriage when she passed away at the same facility in 2010.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., a son of the late Charles A. and Anna C. (Bradford) Bauer, he and his late wife, Diane, had lived nearly 40 years in Middlebury, Vt., where he was a business partner of Farm Engineering Service. He was a World War II Army veteran.

SYLVIA BERGEN

BURLINGTON — Sylvia Reed Bergen, formerly of Monkton and Middlebury, and died at Pillsbury North on Dec. 16, 2015. 

Born in Dayton, Ohio, on Feb. 17, 1925, she was the youngest child of Lucy M. Carr and Alexander Gebhart Reed, She graduated from Vassar College, class of 1946, and married the love of her life, Charles Simon Bergen, on Dec. 18, 1948.

ETHEL BLAKLEY

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Ethel A. Blakley, 98, of West Hartford, formerly of Bloomfield, passed away on Dec. 30, 2015, at the Hebrew Home.

She leaves her son, Marlin Blakley and his wife Joyce of Windsor; a daughter, Betty Anderson and her husband Paul of New Port Richey, Fla.; three brothers, George, Rollie, and Philip Benedict, and a sister, Wilma Poljacik, all of Vermont; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews and their families.

MIDDLEBURY — A celebration of the life of Dina Edelman of Middlebury, who died Jan. 3, 2016, will be held on Sunday, Jan. 24, at noon in the Founders’ Room of the Residence at Otter Creek.

BARBARA GENT

MIDDLEBURY — Barbara Vinal Gent died on Dec. 10, 2015, at The Residence at Otter Creek in Middlebury following a brief illness. Born July 30, 1922, in Lewiston, Maine, she was the daughter of Frances (Turgeon) and Daniel Wiggin.

Barb graduated from Smith College in 1944 and taught English at St. Margaret’s School (Virginia) and Dana Hall School (Massachusetts), and later earned her master’s from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.

CATHERINE MARSH

ST. GEORGE — Catherine Pettit Marsh (Jan. 14, 1961-Dec. 18, 2015) passed away after a 20-year battle with an autoimmune disorder, before succumbing to a hard-fought battle with cancer, never losing her smile or upbeat spirit. Her love of life and grace through tragedy was an inspiration to all who knew her. She will be sadly missed.

Born and raised in Concord, Mass., Cathy attended Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Mass., and CCRI, then worked as an advocate for children with special needs.

FERRISBURGH — Janice B. Porter, 75, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016, at Helen Porter Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

She was born Dec. 31, 1940, in Panton, the daughter of Harold and Ethel (Rogers) Beach.

She is survived by four children, Laura Lee Bushey, Patrick Porter, Samantha Porter and Moose Porter; and six grandchildren, Michaela, Katherine, David, Izaiha, Robert III and Elizbeth.

KENT SPAULDING

INVERNESS, Fla. — Kent Nolan Spaulding, 62, died unexpectedly in his home in in Inverness, Fla., on Dec. 3, 2015.

He was born on April 7, 1953, graduated from Middlebury Union High School in 1971, worked at Polymers in Middlebury, then moved to Inverness.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Tyley Spaulding of Inverness; son Christopher Spaulding of New Haven, Vt.; sisters Susan Lee of East Middlebury, Vt., and Sally Rigg of Bridport, Vt.; brother Carroll “Skip” Spaulding of Amherst, Mass.; and two stepdaughters.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
