Women's tennis wins a pair, ranked at No. 7

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Middlebury College women’s tennis team picked up two recent 9-0 victories, one in the first of three matches played in the Panthers’ spring trip to California, to improve to 5-0, but two tough tests lie in wait for a team ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division III.

On Thursday, the Panthers will visit No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer, and on Saturday they will travel to No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps before returning next weekend to start NESCAC play on the road.

Panther softball ends spring trip with 5-3 mark

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Middlebury softball team ended its eight-game spring break trip to Clermont, Fla., with a 5-3 record after playing games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Next up for the Panthers is a three-game set on Friday and Saturday at NESCAC West rival Amherst.

Middlebury concluded its trip by winning two of the three contests on Sunday. The Panthers opened with a win over Buffalo State (8-8) before defeating Thomas (4-9). The day ended with a loss to Luther, at 19-1 the No. 7 team in NCAA Division III.

Panthers earn victories in California track and field meet

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Alexandra Morris broke the school record in the 400-meter dash and Sebastian Matt won the 5,000-meter run as the Middlebury College track and field teams opened their annual spring trip to California in the Point Loma Nazarene University Collegiate Invitational.

The Panther women finished sixth out of 18 teams with 145 points, while the men were seventh of 21 with 164 points. Middlebury returns to action Saturday at the California Collegiate Invitational hosted by U.C.-San Diego.

Middlebury College baseball battered in the early going

TUCSON, Ariz. — After the Middlebury College baseball team won the opening game of its spring trip to Arizona, the Panthers dropped five straight, including a couple heartbreakers, to stand at 2-6 heading into a Wednesday game vs. Gustavus Adolphus.

The Panthers will also take on NESCAC West foe Williams in a three-game set in Tucson this Friday and Saturday before returning to Vermont, where they are scheduled to host Norwich on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

On this past Saturday, the Panthers opened their trip with a split of two seven-inning games against Oberlin.

Anglers challenged to catch five species

MIDDLEBURY — With the sleet coming down hard on an early spring day, Peter Howe glances out the window, laces up his running shoes and heads for Chipman Hill. His stride is light, easy and relaxed as he climbs through the muddy, slushy slop. On a day when some athletes choose to stay indoors, the 19-year-old Middlebury College sophomore of Gilmanton Ironworks, N.H., is on his second outdoor run of the afternoon.

Men's lacrosse picks up pair of hard-fought victories

PLATTSBURGH — The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team picked up a pair of road wins in recent action, an overtime decision in a Saturday NESCAC contest, and a non-league victory at Plattsburgh on Tuesday. Middlebury improved to 4-2 heading into a game at NESCAC foe Bowdoin on Saturday and are now ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division III.

On this past Saturday, Panther Jack Gould scored a man-up goal 50 seconds into overtime as Middlebury earned a 9-8 win at Wesleyan (3-2, 1-2 NESCAC).

MIDDLEBURY — The seventh-ranked Middlebury women’s tennis team on Saturday prevailed in a matchup of top-10 NCAA Division III and NESCAC foes, 7-2 over No. 8 Wesleyan. The Panthers (3-0) will return to the court on Friday at Babson.

Local girls named basketball standouts

ADDISON COUNTY — Six members of the four local high school girls’ basketball teams earned postseason recognition from either the Lake Division or Marble Valley League B Division coaches, including Middlebury Union High School sophomore Keagan Dunbar, who was named the Lake Division Player of the Year.

Joining Dunbar as a Lake Division First-Team All-Star was Mount Abraham sophomore Emma Carter.
