Team Paquette wins Brush event

MIDDLEBURY — Team Paquette prevailed in the annual Buster Brush Memorial Tournament, held on Friday, May 18, at Ralph Myhre Golf Course.

Rouse’s Tire and Foster Motors placed second and third, respectively, and the Newton for Sheriff! team earned the Best Dressed award.

In regular Bill Davidson Thursday Men’s Golf on May 17 the threesome of Deem Schoenfeld, Joe Thilbourg and Dave Foran prevailed, with Thilbourg also earning the event’s low net score.

In lacrosse, Tiger, VUHS girls prevail; Eagles boys fall

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school lacrosse play earlier this week the Middlebury and Vergennes-Mount Abraham girls picked up wins, while the Mount Abraham-Vergennes boys came up short despite a strong effort.

MUHS boys' tennis nets victories

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ tennis team continued a successful season on Monday by coasting past shorthanded Spaulding, 6-1.

The victory over the winless Tide moved the Tigers’ record to 6-3 with two matches left in the regular season, thus clinching a winning record for the team. The Tigers were set to visit BFA-St. Albans on Wednesday before wrapping up with a trip to Harwood on Saturday.

MUHS girls' tennis earns first win

BARTON — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ tennis team split two recent matches, including picking up the Tigers’ first win of the season on this past Friday, 6-1, at Lake Region. MUHS (1-9) also lost on Monday, 7-0, to host Spaulding. 

On Friday at Lake Region the Tigers claimed four of five singles matches and won both doubles contests by forfeit.

•  At No. 1 singles, Sierra Barnicle (MUHS) defeated Meghan Gervais, 6-1, 6-4.

Panther women's lax back in NCAA final four

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Division III final four for the 19th time in the program’s history by winning a home NCAA regional this past weekend. The Panthers will be seeking the program’s seventh NCAA title and second in Coach Kate Livesay’s three years.

Tigers, Eagles win at MUHS track meet

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ and girls’ teams on May 16 each took third at a 10-team meet the Tigers hosted at Middlebury College. The Mount Abraham girls were fourth, while the Eagle boys were seventh.

The Tigers and Eagles combined for a dozen event wins, seven by MUHS and five by Mount Abe.

Tiger CJ Bryant led the way with two individual wins and efforts on two successful relay teams, while teammate Isabel Olson also won two races. Eagle Jackson Counter won two throwing events to pace his team.

Andy Kirkaldy: Teams warming up with approach of postseason

Spring has finally arrived, and many of the local high school teams are making up for earlier games lost to rain, snow and soaked fields with packed schedules. Middlebury girls’ lacrosse, for example, had eight games stuffed in between May 10 and 25, while their Vergennes-Mount Abraham girls’ lax peers had 10 games crammed in between May 8 and 24.

Well, that’s one way to tune up for the playoffs, which will begin next week after the athletes catch their breath over the Memorial Day weekend.

Tiger girls' lax falls to CVU, 15-10; defeats Burlington, Essex

MIDDLEBURY — In the middle of a busy stretch of eight games in its final two weeks due to earlier postponements, on Friday the Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team dropped a key contest to visiting Champlain Valley, 15-10.

The defending Division I champion Tigers, who the Saturday before suffered only their second loss of the past two years, 12-11 at first-place CVU, had rebounded with decisive wins over Burr and Burton and Essex on Monday and Wednesday before facing CVU (12-1) at home.

Boys' lax: Otter Valley, Mt. Abe tie; Tigers fall

ADDISON COUNTY — The Otter Valley and Mount Abraham-Vergennes teams settled for a double-overtime stalemate to highlight local boys’ lacrosse action late last week. In other play the Eagles and Middlebury boys both came up short.

On Saturday the Otters and Eagles battled to a 5-5 tie after two overtimes. OV goalie Alec Stevens and Mount Abe’s Grady Brokaw each made a dozen stops, including key saves in the overtime periods.
