Panther track opens spring slate, posts solid results out west

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Middlebury College men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the outdoor portion of the schedule on Saturday by competing at the PLNU Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Point Loma Nazarene.

The Panther men won the invitational by collecting 155 points among 11 scoring teams, edging out Tufts, which finished with 151. The women finished third among 13 scoring teams with 114 points, trailing only the host Sea Lions (197) and Williams (194).

MIDDLEBURY — Anyone wondering what would happen when a women’s lacrosse team averaging more than 18 goals a game meets one allowing fewer than three goals a game got one answer on Saturday at Middlebury College.

High school seniors play in hoop star games

WINDSOR — Eight high school senior athletes participated on Saturday in the annual Vermont Basketball Coaches Association’s North-South all-star games at Windsor High School, and an Otter Valley junior was honored.

Mount Abraham’s Emma Carter and Emma LaRose, Middlebury’s Keagan Dunbar, and Otter Valley’s Gabby Poalino played for the Division I and II girls’ all-star team that lost to the North squad, 97-57. Notably, Dunbar led the South team with nine points and also won the halftime three-point shooting contest.

BRISTOL — When former Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer players talk about longtime coach Mike Corey they first look back on their days as kids at Corey’s annual summer camps.

Silas Doyle-Burr, a 2005 Mount Abe graduate who is now the owner of Monkton’s Last Resort Farm, remembers a thread from Corey’s Summit Soccer Camp that wove through his Eagle years.

Women's lax grounds Cardinals, climbs to No. 2 in NCAA Division III

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team cruised to a 13-1 NESCAC victory over visiting Wesleyan Saturday to improve to 13-1. The Panthers (5-0 overall, 3-0 NESCAC) moved up to No. 2 from No. 4 in the NCAA Division III rankings after No. 2 TCNJ and No. 3 Trinity both suffered their first losses last week. Defending champ Gettysburg (5-0) remained No. 1. The Panthers host No. 20 Bowdoin this coming Saturday at noon.

Middlebury College baseball team drops three games

ATLANTA, Ga. — The Middlebury College baseball team hit a rough patch this past weekend in Atlanta, dropping three games to fall to 1-5. The Panthers return to action on Saturday in California on their annual spring break trip, which will culminate the following weekend with a three-game set with NESCAC rival Williams.

On this past Sunday Emory (8-9) held off a Middlebury rally to win, 10-7.

Women's tennis blanks two foes to remain undefeated

The Panthers, ranked fourth in NCAA Division III, head west for five matches in California during their spring break trip, starting with a contest at Grossman on Sunday.

Panther men's tennis wins matches, run their record to 5-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Middlebury College men’s tennis team, ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division III, on Saturday improved to 5-0 with victories at No. 21 MIT, 6-3, and at No. 21 Brandeis, 9-0. The Panthers return to action during their spring break trip with seven matches in California, beginning with a contest on Saturday at Azusa Pacific.

In the match at MIT (2-3), the Panthers’ doubles teams of Noah Farrell and Peter Martin at No. 2, Timo van der Geest and Nate Eazor at No. 3 and Lubomir Cuba and Kyle Schlanger at No. 1 gave Middlebury a 3-0 lead.
