Bristol reaches planning milestone

A milestone in the Bristol town planning process occurred recently when the Bristol Planning Commission signed off on its third draft of the revised town plan and sent it to the Bristol Selectboard for review. It’s a milestone because the planning commission has spent four and a half years crafting a 100-plus-page document that significantly rewrites the town plan.

High school sports season arrives

ADDISON COUNTY AND BRANDON — The Otter Valley boys’ soccer team has the honor of kicking off the local high school sports season this fall: The Otters host Proctor at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, when also they will christen OV’s new athletic field behind the building.

Two-and-a-half hours later the OV girls’ soccer team is next up, with an away night game at Mount Anthony. By Sept. 8, when the Middlebury Union boys’ soccer team opens with a 7 p.m. game at Fair Haven, all 18 varsity teams at OV, MUHS, Mount Abraham and Vergennes will have hit the fields or the trails.

Playing field now more level for MUHS teams

This school year will see almost all Middlebury Union High School sports competing at the Division II level, with the exceptions being field hockey and both lacrosse teams.

Other Tiger athletic programs are already in D-II, including basketball, soccer and boys’ cross-country. Still other girls’ programs are now technically in D-I, but are in the process of being moved to D-II, according to MUHS activities director Sean Farrell. Because the numbers are within appeal guidelines, Farrell expects the Vermont Principals’ Association to OK the changes.

Gov. Douglas’ announcement that he will not run again for governor catches the state’s political gurus off-guard. Nearly everyone thought he would run for a fifth term and, most likely, win.

Addison County Independent: Breaking News

MIDDLEBURY — Sources this morning confirmed that Vermont Gov. James Douglas will announce today that he will not seek reelection in 2010.

The Middlebury Republican, who is serving his fourth term as governor, will make the announcement at an 11 a.m. press conference from the governor’s ceremonial office at the Statehouse.

Douglas has served 36 years in public office. A Massachusetts native, he was first elected to the Vermont House in 1972, the year he graduated from Middlebury College.

MONTPELIER — Gov. James Douglas, a Middlebury Republican who has provided almost continuous service to the state since 1973, announced this morning that he will not seek a fifth term in Vermont’s top elected office.

Speaking in the governor’s ceremonial office in the Statehouse and flanked by many members of his cabinet, Douglas in an 11-minute speech stated that he was ready to move.

County stung by late mosquito outbreak

BRIPORT — Abundant rainfall coupled with late-summer heat and humidity have contributed to one of the worst mosquito outbreaks ever, though cooling temperatures this week should soon take some of the sting out of the latest adult hatch, local insect-control officials said.

“Things have gone south; it’s not good right now,” Paul Doty, manager of the Brandon-Leicester-Salisbury-Goshen (BLSG) Insect Control District, said late last week. He noted a recent spike in the mosquito population — particularly in the Lake Dunmore region.
