Vermont’s and New York’s annual shared celebration of Lake Champlain takes on a heightened importance in this year of the quadricentennial of the arrival of Samuel de Champlain into Lake Champlain. The Festival of Nations hosted by the Chimney Point Historic Site in Addison, Vt., and Crown Point, N.Y., Historic Site this Friday through Sunday will feature a wide variety of events, including the 14th Annual Northeastern Open Atlatl Championship at Chimney Point, named a Top Ten Vermont Fall Event for 2009 by the Vermont State Chamber of Commerce.
ADDISON COUNTY — Wanted: Addison County residents willing to give a voice to abused, neglected or troubled children who cannot speak for themselves in the local court system.
Qualifications: An open heart, objective mind and a willingness to inject oneself into some at-times very emotional and challenging domestic situations.
Compensation: None, save for mileage, phone calls and the priceless feeling of knowing you’ve helped some of the county’s most vulnerable citizens.
MIDDLEBURY — The fourth annual Kelly Brush Century Ride kicked off early on Saturday morning to cool temperatures and thick crowds at Middlebury College, where cyclists in the benefit ride gathered before pedaling off on 25-, 50- or 100-mile routes.
At Middlebury College’s football stadium this past Saturday the parking lots were full, people filled the lawn to overflowing in front of the stadium on this fall-like morning, but none of the 495 athletes and hundreds of supporters were there to watch football — they were cyclists and they were there to ride 25, 50 or 100 miles in support of the Kelly Brush Foundation.
MIDDLEBURY — State officials on Monday gave the green light to a private, New Jersey-based home-health services provider to operate in Vermont, a scenario that some state nonprofits believe could bring more competition in an industry already beset with tight margins.
At issue is a successful effort from Bayada Nurses Inc. of Moorestown, N.J., to buy Professional Nurses Service Inc. (PNS) of Vermont, which in 2005 became the first private firm to be given state permission to compete against nonprofits for clients in the home health services industry.
The gifted songwriters Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist (collectively known as the band “Over The Rhine”), begin their song “Changes Come” with the simple observation, “Changes come / Turn my world around.”
Changes do come. I find the changes especially noticeable in the autumn. Weather changes. Daylight hours change — and in September they change rapidly. Our daily routines changes as vacations end and kids head back to school.
VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School soccer team shrugged off yet a couple more injuries and used a strong defensive effort to blank visiting Middlebury on Tuesday, 2-0.
The Commodores began the fall knowing that two projected contributors would miss the season with knee injuries. They started Tuesday’s game without high-scoring sophomore Kenadi Dattilio, who they hope will return vs. Mount Abraham this Saturday after being hurt last week. And then they saw senior central midfielder Gen Cohn go down with an ankle injury in the 32nd minute while Tuesday’s game was still scoreless.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School football team used a passing attack to earn 14 fourth-quarter points on Friday and rally past visiting Fair Haven, 14-6, in a Division II contest.
Junior quarterback Brendan Burrell hit senior wideout Devin Bradford as the quarter opened and sophomore halfback Marshall Hastings with 1:07 to go. Junior halfback Jerry Hoffman also tossed a two-point conversion to Bradford on an option play.
