VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School girls’ basketball team gave undefeated Montpelier a battle on Monday, but the visiting Solons pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 48-34 win.

The 6-0 Solons used stingy man-to-man defense and solid ball movement to lead most of the way against the 1-5 Commodores.

VUHS also played well in its halfcourt-man defense, and when junior guard Ali Provost hit three straight treys in the second quarter, the Commodores took the lead.

MIDDLEBURY — On Dec. 16, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets suspended the dealer license of Middlebury livestock dealers Bernard and Louis Quesnel, who do business as Quesnel Livestock. Politically Thinking: Bernanke takes economic spotlight

Posted on December 23, 2009 |
By Eric L. Davis

Federal Reserve Board Chair Ben Bernanke has been on a publicity offensive for the last several months. He wants to mobilize support for his own renomination for another term and to oppose several bills making their way through Congress that would strip the Fed of some of its powers or subject its decisions to more review on Capitol Hill. Bernanke has appeared on 60 Minutes, written op-ed columns for major newspapers, and held a town hall meeting in Kansas City that was broadcast on PBS.

A Season for what?

Posted on December 23, 2009 |
By Matt Dickerson

In my previous column I made light of the human propensity to whine — a trait at least as common among outdoor enthusiasts as in the general population. And November and December are especially good months for complaining. For one thing, it is the season for steelhead fishing and duck hunting. Of all hunting and fishing sports, these may be the two that inflict the most suffering, and thus also engender the greatest level of stoic pride among participants.

View from the Borderland: A light in the darkness

Posted on December 22, 2009 | Blog Category:
By Rebecca Reimers

I have just finished putting out my rows of milk cartons with 24-hour votives lit inside them. It is the evening of Dec. 21, the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year. For those of us who migrated to the North Country, winter solstice is a bit of a non-event in terms of marking the official beginning of winter.
