Middlebury College fires up $12 million biomass plant

MIDDLEBURY — “It really all begins here,” Mike Moser said as the loading bay door at the Middlebury College biomass plant rattled open. “Here” is a cement bunker-like hole in the earth — heaping with sweet-smelling, amber colored wood chips.

Tiger girls put clamps on Commodores

VERGENNES — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team got hot on offense in the second quarter of Saturday’s game at Vergennes, and then put the clamps on the Commodores in the third quarter to win, 45-26.

Barns, calves saved in huge Addison fire

ADDISON — The owners of an Addison farm that lost a large two-story, calf barn to a fast-moving fire early on Feb. 6 say they are profoundly grateful to the 70 firefighters from five local departments who saved 92 of the 107 animals in the structure and prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures. Four buildings, including a home and two major freestall barns full of milkers, were within about 60 feet of the huge blaze.

Local option tax yields almost $158,000 for Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury collected $157,901 in local option taxes during the last quarter of 2008, leaving officials optimistic the new revenue source will yield adequate funds over time to cover the town’s share of the Cross Street Bridge project.
