ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County and Brandon voters followed statewide trends on Tuesday in backing Democrat Peter Shumlin for governor, Republican Phil Scott for lieutenant governor, Democrat Jim Condos for secretary of state, and incumbent Republican Tom Salmon for state auditor.
Area voters also joined the groundswell of support that swept incumbent U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., to new terms in office.
ADDISON COUNTY — Incumbent state Sen. Harold Giard, D-Bridport, will return for a fourth consecutive term representing Addison County and Brandon, though his re-election remained in doubt until the wee hours of Wednesday morning as a result of a spirited challenge from Orwell Republican Mark Young.
Giard finished second, with 7,366 tallies, behind Senate Majority Whip Claire Ayer, D-Weybridge, who garnered 9,516 votes in her successful run for a fifth consecutive term.
MIDDLEBURY — An army of pirates, goblins and superheroes poured across the Otter Creek on Saturday by way of a brand new span that had been on the town of Middlebury’s drawing board since the early 1950s.
And as the Halloween revelers danced on what a half century ago was only a dream, town officials had to be pinching themselves.
This was not a trick.
It was a treat.
NEW HAVEN — New Haven Republican Harvey Smith will be returning to the Montpelier after a four-year hiatus.
Voters in the Addison-5 House district of New Haven, Weybridge and Bridport gave Smith the nod over Weybridge Democrat Spence Putnam by a 1,003 to 843 margin after heavy voting on Tuesday.
“I’m thrilled,” Smith said of the result, which he said was a product of a lot of door-to-door campaigning.
“I wore out my shoes again,” he quipped.
BRISTOL — Once again, Democratic incumbents Michael Fisher and David Sharpe came out on top over their Republican challengers in the race for the Addison-4 Vermont House seats representing Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro on Tuesday.
Lincoln resident Fisher banked a total of 2,082 votes, with Sharpe, of Bristol, coming in at 1,891. Fred Baser finished third with 1,664 votes and John “Peeker” Heffernan followed with 1,474. Baser and Heffernan are also Bristol residents.
VERGENNES — Reps. Gregory Clark, R-Vergennes, and Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes, retained their Addison-3 seats in the Vermont House of Representatives on Tuesday, turning back challenges from former GOP representative and former Vergennes mayor Thelma “Kitty” Oxholm and veteran Democratic candidate and area businesswoman Elizabeth Markowski of Ferrisburgh.
SHOREHAM — Incumbent independent Will Stevens of Shoreham on Tuesday won his third term in the Vermont House of Representatives with a 1,059 to 599 victory over Whiting Republican Joy Jones in the Addison-Rutland-1 district, which encompasses Shoreham, Whiting, Orwell and Benson.
Voters in several other area towns returned incumbents to the Vermont House in three uncontested races: Willem Jewett in Addison-2, Republican Joe Acinapura in Brandon, and Betty Nuovo in Middlebury. Newcomer Paul Ralston also won a seat in Middlebury.
