Bristol officer leaves prisoner outside

BRISTOL — A Bristol police officer’s decision to leave a prisoner handcuffed to a wall outside a jail for nearly a half hour on Feb. 7 has sparked a criminal investigation into the possible mistreatment of an alleged offender and a violation of custody rules.

VUHS tames Tigers, 52-36, wraps up county sweep

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team defeated visiting Middlebury on Friday, 52-36, accomplishing two things in the process.

The 10-8 Commodores completed a four-game sweep of county rivals Mount Abraham and MUHS, never an easy task, and they also ended the 1-17 Tigers’ hopes of reaching the Division II playoffs.

Despite the frustrations that are inevitable in a one-win season, Tiger coach Chris Altemose found some bright spots on Friday.

Students to spend break helping out in Honduras

MIDDLEBURY — Most Addison County students will spend their upcoming winter break week chilling at home and hanging out with friends. But several of their peers will be spending that time doing some heavy lifting for a humanitarian cause a few thousand miles away from the Green Mountain State.

The local high school students later this week will be winging their way to Honduras, where they will help a struggling community that continues to rebuild its infrastructure a dozen years after being devastated by Hurricane Mitch.

View from the Borderland: Why Leicester should send its students to Neshobe

After two go-rounds, Leicester is still a wallflower at the school merger dance, having been turned down by Sudbury and most recently by Salisbury. It’s time to invite Leicester’s 60 students and all of the town’s taxpayers to come join us at Neshobe Community School in Brandon. We certainly have the room.

Middlebury cuts break to retain hard cider firm

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen took a big step toward retaining a major, growing local business on Monday at a regular selectboard meeting when they offered to waive sewer and water tap-on fees for an expansion project being considered by Green Mountain Beverage (GMB) on Pond Lane.

MUHS offers placement for Haitians

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School may temporarily expand its district boundaries by several thousand miles to help educate as many as six Haitian students whose own schools were reduced to rubble by the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake.

Schools consider costs of lunch programs

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board of directors is faced with a quandary these days: Continuing to subsidize the high school’s in-house lunch program is an expensive prospect, but making changes to the food service program could come at the cost of local control and current employees’ benefits.
