VERGENNES — On an elevated mat with more than 1,200 fans watching in the Vergennes Union High School gym, Otter Valley’s George Mitchell and Middlebury’s Bryan Ashley-Selleck, both juniors, on Saturday night won state titles at the Vermont state high school wrestling championship meet.

They and the other top-three finishers — including Tiger senior Kaden Odell, second at 145 pounds; and Vergennes sophomore Geoffrey Grant, second at 171 — became eligible to compete at the New England championship tournament this Friday and Saturday in New Haven, Conn.

VERGENNES — In a vote watched closely around Vermont, residents of all five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union communities on Tuesday backed strongly the plan to have one 12-member board govern the four-school union.

The final tally was 908-539, or about 63-37 percent, with wide margins in each town.

As of June 2011, the existing Vergennes Union High and Elementary school boards, Ferrisburgh and Addison Central school boards, and ANwSU board will dissolve and the union will assume ownership of all four schools.

Games often memorable, or even more

My family’s Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics viewing experience officially ended on Monday night with a week’s worth of DVR’d “Colbert Reports” devoted to the events.

We learned that Jeret “Speedy” Peterson not only can throw down on the mountain, but he can hold his own with Stephen Colbert. A nervous, giggling Lindsey Vonn, not so much. But that was OK; a lot of polished politicians can’t deal with the off-the-wall Colbert.

Posted on March 4, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — By a nearly two-to-one margin, Bristol residents this week sent a crystal clear message to the town’s planning commission: It’s time to head back to the drawing board when it comes to the contentious town plan and gravel extraction zoning ordinance.

That message had been broadcast by a few vocal town residents at a series of public meetings and hearings over the past year, but those opponents were joined on Tuesday at the polls by hundreds of supporters. The town plan fell, 364 for to 598 against, and the extraction ordinance toppled in a 349 to 627 vote.

BRANDON — Voters in Brandon overwhelmingly approved a $395,000 bond for a new police station, and they approved all other items on their Town Meeting Day warning, as well.

The town budget, the Neshobe School budget and 13 other articles on the ballot were all given the green light by the Brandon voting public.

Officials said 888 Brandon residents turned out to vote on Town Meeting Day, which is roughly 45 percent of those on the town checklist.

MIDDLEBURY — Early on Saturday morning, the second large earthquake to rock the Western Hemisphere in as many months hit just off the coast of Chile.

Here in Middlebury, the time was 1:34 a.m. For some, the remainder of the night became sleepless.

“I got a phone call on Saturday morning at 4 a.m.,” said Jeff Cason, the Dean of International Studies at Middlebury College.
