MIDDLEBURY — The United Way of Addison County (UWAC) officially launched its 2010 fund drive on Thursday by sending around 600 community volunteers to toil at many of the local nonprofits that will share in what officials hope will be a bounty of financial donations.

United Way officials this year have set a campaign goal of $775,000 — the same financial goal that was set last year. An ongoing sluggish economy conspired to leave UWAC $40,000 short of that fund-raising finish line, but campaign organizers — led by co-chairs Pam and Erin Quinn — are optimistic for a better result for 2010.

MIDDLEBURY — Green Mountain Beverage’s (GMB) dramatic expansion plans started coming to fruition last week with the delivery of three enormous apple juice holding tanks, the first phase of a major growth blueprint for the nation’s largest hard cider producer that is to include a 7,400-square-foot addition at its Pond Lane plant next year.

The growth spurt comes in wake of the Middlebury selectboard’s decision this past winter to waive sewer and water tap-on fees for GMB’s planned building addition, which will primarily feature new offices, a conference room and visitors’ center.

MIDDLEBURY — With about 0:30 left in Friday’s key Division II football game vs. visiting Mount Mansfield, the Middlebury Union High School coaches were hoping for a blocked punt, a long return, or, failing those options, a big play from an offense that had found the going tough for most of the evening.

More likely, they were starting to think about play-calling for the overtime that loomed large: With the Cougars lining up to punt from their own 28, the score stood at 12-12.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley last week received a significant bump in rank, one that will extend his law enforcement influence far beyond Addison County’s shire town.

Exciting Times for Middlebury

Posted on September 20, 2010 |
By Angelo Lynn

News that Middlebury business leaders, town officials and Middlebury College are combining forces to spur economic development (job growth) and economic activity among existing businesses should be embraced enthusiastically by all who value a healthy commercial center with the amenities needed to serve a vibrant community.

Table Talk: Of weddings and coincidences

Posted on September 17, 2010 | Blog Category:

My cousin’s wedding reception was on the lawn of my aunt and uncle’s house, which sits out on a bluff overlooking Lake George, in New York’s Adirondack region. Wind from the hurricane hundreds of miles off the coast whipped the lake’s surface into whitecaps, and the flaps of the large canvas tent snapped and fluttered.
