MIDDLEBURY — The Farmers Diner ended an almost two-year run in Middlebury on Feb. 14 after the owners determined there was not enough customer traffic to keep the eatery afloat any longer.
“It was totally an economic decision,” said Farmers Diner founder Tod Murphy. “There was just not enough business to keep us open.”
Talk about farming in Vermont these days and all the buzz is about Farm-to-Plate legislation, buying local, organic if possible, and the niche market potential of value added products. It’s enough to make large-scale dairy farmers stand up and scream, “Hey, what about me!”

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin told Porter Medical Center officials on Tuesday to be patient in weathering what he believes will be a short-term financial storm en route to a new, single-payer health care system he said will bring long-term success and financial sustainability to the industry.
MIDDLEBURY — Local health care providers on Monday continued to warn lawmakers that their industry could soon be in critical condition if the state tries to balance its budget on the backs of hospitals and the medical community.
The subject of health care reform once again dominated discussion at the weekly Addison County Legislative Breakfast, held this week at the Middlebury Legion hall. Porter Hospital officials turned out in force to weigh in on state budget discussions and health care reform efforts under way in Montpelier.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College will sell the former Addison County Courthouse at 5 Court St. to the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies. The organization, known as VCET, will use a portion of the building as a local headquarters to further its mission of helping entrepreneurs establish new high-tech businesses in the state.
FERRISBURGH — This Tuesday, in a bright, airy room at Ferrisburgh’s Kimball Brook Farm, Congressman Peter Welch perched on a chair in a suit and wool socks and listened to owners Cheryl and J.D. DeVos speak about the dairy processing facility that they plan to open early this summer.
