Clippings: Adventure racing proves addictive

My legs nearly gave out before I reached the smoldering lines of fire, but I hurdled the first, then the second, with every ounce of strength I had remaining. That done, I plunged into the muddy, sour-smelling pond and made for the barbed wire that was all that stood between me and the finish line.

Let’s be clear here: Under normal circumstances I can run a 5K without my legs giving out, my lungs exploding, or my entire body aching for the next two days.

Vt. State Police Log: Cars broken into at recreation areas

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police reported that several vehicles recently have been broken into during daylight hours at popular hiking, swimming and other recreation locations in the county, resulting in damage to vehicles and items being stolen. Troopers urged people to lock their vehicles with their windows up, and leave all valuables at home when planning to be at these locations for any period of time.

Panther football program takes on trio of Tigers

MIDDLEBURY — This fall at Middlebury College’s Alumni Stadium, three Panther football assistant coaches will be applying lessons they say they learned a little bit to the east at Middlebury Union High School’s Doc Collins Field, home of the football Tigers.

Panther Head Football Coach Bob Ritter has six paid assistants. When 2002 MUHS graduate Shem Johnston-Bloom signed on this summer as Ritter’s recruiting coordinator and linebackers coach, that meant half of those aides are former MUHS football standouts.

Many make mark on National 9/11 Flag

MIDDLEBURY — It was but one stitch in a 20-foot-by-30.5-foot piece of fabric, but Kristen Farrell of Monkton savored the moment as her fingers eased the thread into place.

With one stroke of her hand, Farrell had brought the National 9/11 Flag — and her own heart — closer to repair.

Middlebury Police Log: Man cited for domestic assault

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Andrew R. Brown, 40, of Middlebury for domestic assault after an incident at a Water Street residence on Aug. 21. Police said Brown was lodged at the Marble Valley Correctional Center.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

  Assisted Porter Hospital officials with an out-of-control patient on Aug. 16.
