BRISTOL — For many 20-somethings, moving to New York City to make it as actors and directors is a pipedream.
For siblings Brighton and Sarah Jean Luke, Bristol natives and members of the Mount Abraham Union High School class of 2007, that pipedream isn’t just their reality — it’s also the inspiration for their first film, “American Dreamsicle,” which is currently in production.
BRISTOL — “Big cups for a big success!” said Bristol Planning Commission chair Chico Martin, doling out red solo cups of sparkling cider to the planning commissioners, town office staff and newspaper reporter gathered in Holley Hall last Tuesday.
It was the planning commission’s first meeting since the updated Bristol Town Plan, the product of eight years of the effort, passed with 68.7 percent of the vote on Election Day.
NEW HAVEN — Gail Freidin is working with the Vermont Land Trust to donate a conservation easement on 74 acres of her property on Munger Street. The land is a scenic and productive mix of open meadows and forest.
Fifty acres of cropland are used by the nearby Butler dairy farm.
MIDDLEBURY — Remember Stella Leiback, an elderly woman from New Mexico who sued McDonald’s for upwards of $2 million after spilling a cup of scalding hot coffee on her lap at a drive-through? If so, you may also remember that the media worked itself into a tizzy over the Leiback case, which became something of a poster child for what some Americans perceived to be a rising trend of frivolous lawsuits.
If you don’t remember, don’t worry — most of what the media reported, including the $2 million figure, was inaccurate.
WEYBRIDGE — The Weybridge selectboard last week held an emergency meeting at which they appointed Brenda Jaring as interim Weybridge town clerk and treasurer. Jaring, in turn, will appoint New Haven resident Beverly Landon as assistant town clerk and assistant treasurer.
The board had previously named Landon to the interim jobs, but later discovered through the Vermont Secretary of State’s Office that they couldn’t take that action because Landon is not a Weybridge resident.
MIDDLEBURY — A 2007 Middlebury Union High School graduate who won two Vermont wrestling titles as a member of the Tiger wrestling team will take over the MUHS wrestling program this winter.
But Ethan Raymond, 23, who went on to win the 2011 New England NCAA Division III 165-pound championship for Bridgewater State University, will not exactly replace longtime MUHS coach Jon Ashley, a former Vermont high school coach of the year.
MIDDLEBURY — Otter Creek Brewing Co. of Middlebury hit for the cycle, taking home gold, silver and two bronze medals at the 16th annual Great International Beer Festival earlier this month in Providence, R.I. A panel of 83 judges selected winners in 44 categories after blind tasting 470 beers and ciders from around the globe.
MIDDLEBURY — The United Methodist Church of Middlebury, located at the corner of North Pleasant and Seminary streets, is selling trees and wreaths to benefit both local and world service commitments.
Those wishing to buy a holiday decoration may visit the church on five dates in the first three weekends of December.
