MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team romped to three wins in the latter half of last week to improve to 5-0, 4-0 in NESCAC. The Panthers were ranked No. 7 in last week’s NCAA Division III poll.
On Wednesday, the Panthers topped host Skidmore, 16-5, dropping the Thoroughbreds to 3-1.
EAST MIDDLEBURY — On Thursday night, members of the Middlebury River task force — comprised of citizens, scientists and local officials — spoke with more than 50 people in East Middlebury about the contentious future of the river that flooded the village during Tropical Storm Irene.
MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Attorney General Bill Sorrell is asking the state Legislature to allocate $200,000 for additional manpower to investigate and prosecute child pornography offenders, this in view of the fact that only a small fraction of such cases are able to be pursued under current budget constraints.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Community Television (MCTV) and Ilsley Public Library are becoming more and more aligned in seeking to not only distribute published content, but to help people create and distribute their own content.
“We’re looking to the future, and we’re seeing our missions converge more and more,” MCTV Executive Director Dick Thodal said following the Middlebury nonprofit’s annual meeting at the Ilsley Thursday night.
MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Superior Court Judge Helen Toor on Thursday ruled against incumbent Vergennes Union Elementary School board director Cheryl Brinkman’s appeal of her 239-238 Town Meeting Day election loss to challenger Susan Ferland.
That tally had been confirmed by a March 12 Board of Civil Authority recount, but city officials also acknowledged a transcription error that day resulted in confusion over the total amount of votes cast.
BRIDPORT — At a lunch meeting in Bridport last Monday, local legislators participated in a lively conversation with constituents on agricultural issues.
Three legislators — Rep. Will Stevens, I-Shoreham; Rep. Harvey Smith, R-New Haven; and Sen. Harold Giard, D-Bridport — discussed the Working Lands bill, migrant farmworkers, genetically modified crops and a variety of other agricultural topics. The meeting was sponsored by the Bridport Grange and the Addison County Farm Bureau.

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday agreed to assume responsibility for maintaining a cemetery on Mountain View Lane variously known as The First Cemetery, The Old Cemetery or The Burial Ground.
The cemetery is city-owned, but has been maintained since the 1930s by the First Congregational Church of Vergennes, when a trust that had been caring for the cemetery handed over the task to the church.
