Passage of the Middlebury Business Development Fund, 125-64, at Middlebury’s Town Meeting, presents a double-edged sword for ardent proponents: the promise of success and the prospect of failure.
Each year across the county’s 23 towns, a few local “heroes” are honored for service to their communities “beyond the call of duty” or, to put it another way, way beyond what most of us could imagine doing ourselves. So, we offer our sincere thanks and tip our collective hats to them for their magnanimous efforts.
Back in December, when the weather failed to live up to standard expectations for a Vermont winter — that is, cold, dark, snowy and generally miserable — no one panicked. “There’s still a lot of winter left,” everyone said, in a tone of optimism or, at least in my case, dread for what the next three months might hold.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police were informed of the theft of a sculpture from the Ilsley Public Library on Feb. 29. Police said the sculpture was valued at $1,200.
Ilsley officials have offered a reward for information leading to the recovery of the green slate tile carved with an image of a mother and child. Those with information should call the police at 388=3191 or David Clark at Ilsley library at 388-4095.

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are on the lookout for a onetime Middlebury man for allegedly issuing threats.
On Feb. 17 received a report that Kevin Desjardin, 26, was allegedly threatening via Facebook to kill a local woman’s horses and dogs and harm her with a firearm. Police said the messages stem from the woman having knowledge of an incident that took place in Ripton in November of 2011.
