VERGENNES — The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes last month for the second straight time chose reigning Vermont Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year Kaitlin Leroux-Eastman as the local organization’s Youth of the Year.
On April 19 in Montpelier, Leroux-Eastman, a 16-year-old Vergennes Union High School junior with an extensive résumé of service to the youth club and the community, will represent the local organization in the state competition.
President Barack Obama inspired Vermonters last Friday with a stem-winder of a 30-minute campaign speech that reminded the 4,500 in attendance about the political power of unity.
Advocating for fair taxes, expanded health care, a push for higher education and a nation that looks after each other, Obama made the case that the nation was stronger when everyone is pulling for each other.
BRISTOL — Rep. Dave Sharpe, Bristol-D, told the Bristol selectboard on Monday that the town might end up saving more than $100,000 on the South Street Bridge replacement project, slated for 2013.
He explained a section in the Transportation Bill passed by the Vermont House last week, which would require towns to pay only 5 percent of the total cost of a bridge replacement project — instead of the usual 10 percent — with the state picking up the balance.
MIDDLEBURY — On Saturday the Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team faced arguably its toughest test to date, a home game after a day of travel back from Colorado against Bowdoin, which reached the 2011 NCAA Division III final four.
The Polar Bears entered the contest at just 4-2, but were also getting back their best player from injury, center midfielder Katie Stewart.
The Panthers, who last week were ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division III, still won by six, 16-10, to improve to 8-0 overall, 5-0 in NESCAC play.
