From her Lincoln studio an artist paints Vermont's landscape

The light on this cloudy November day is silver and stark, giving the world a washed-out look. Just the sort of day Andrew Wyeth would have loved to paint. But then, as I drive south on a dirt road in Lincoln, the light shifts. Sunlight spills through a gap in the clouds and the world transforms from bleak black-and-white to rich color.

Where before I’d been looking at frost-killed fields and the stubs of dead cornstalks, I’m now noticing the orangey light that illuminates the trees lining the road and brings out the greens still in the grass.

Grant supports high school neuroscience clubs

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience has announces that Lisa Bernardin, the coordinator of the Vermont Brain Bee, has received a “Small and Inspiring” grant from the Vermont Community Foundation (VCF). Through this program, VCF aims to foster the spark and hope that keeps Vermonters healthy and happy by funding and supporting projects in every town in Vermont where a small grant can make a big difference.

Special holiday religious services

ADDISON COUNTY/BRANDON — Several Addison County and Brandon churches have set their schedule for special Christmas events and services.

BRANDON

Brandon Baptist Church will have a candlelight Christmas Eve service on Monday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m.

St. Mary’s Parish will hold a penance service on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. There will be a Christmas Eve service Monday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. There will also be a Christmas Day Mass, Tuesday, Dec. 25, at 10 a.m.

Veteran Slaters too much for young Tiger girls' hoop team

MIDDLEBURY — Tuesday was not a good night for the already inexperienced Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team to be missing two starting forwards: Visiting Fair Haven is a balanced, veteran team that could well be in the Division II title mix.

Predictably, the Slaters took advantage in their 53-10 victory, dominating the boards with a 43-21 rebounding edge while their press and relentless man-to-man defense forced 24 Tiger turnovers.

Young area runner excels at national meet

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Middlebury 12-year-old placed in the top 10 percent of a national cross country running race in Albuquerque, N.M., this past Saturday.

Willem Landis, a seventh-grader at Middlebury Union Middle School, placed 25th at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Cross Country Championship in the Midget division for 11- and 12-year-old boys. He covered the 3,000-meter course at Balloon Fiesta Park in 11:00.07.

OV girls' basketball tops Poultney; Slaters to visit next

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School girls’ basketball team on Tuesday coasted in its season opener, topping visiting Poultney, 58-20.

In the process, the Otters made a winner of new head coach Steve Keith in his debut; Keith is also the school’s first-year activities director.

Keith said he had the Otters press Poultney out of the gate and they took a big early lead on their way to the big win.

Kirkaldy Sports Column: A few requests for Santa from the sports world

If anyone out there doesn’t believe in Santa Claus, please check out the kid’s picture on our Dec. 6 front page smiling at St. Nick in wide-eyed wonder. Case closed.

Now that it has been once again re-established that Santa is real, I have a few sports-world requests for the Sage of the North Pole.

Many people deserve the gift of their dreams: Santa should give them what they want, which herein will be defined as “Visions of Sugar Plums.”
