VERGENNES — Vergennes residents on March 5 will decide whether to support the city council’s $1.85 million bond proposal to pay for a new, 5,940-square-foot police station on North Main Street.
The price tag includes $1.15 million for the building, about $200,000 for site development costs, roughly $80,000 in design fees, a $50,000 contingency, $59,000 for a generator and furniture, and a number of other smaller expenses.
BRISTOL — A new dental center serving people of all income levels is expected to open this fall in Bristol’s revitalized industrial park, thanks to a recently announced $300,000 federal grant that will provide key funding for the longstanding effort.
Moreover, the opening of the Addison County Dental Center (ACDC) is expected to complement a concurrent effort to establish a Federally Qualified Health Center, or FQHC, at the town’s industrial park, which is gaining new momentum as BristolWorks.
MONKTON — Last August was the first time Beverly Latreille, 82, of Rotax Road in Monkton heard of it. The man who came to her door was working for an engineering firm that had been hired by Vermont Gas Systems, the South Burlington natural gas company now planning to build a 42-mile, $72 million pipeline extension through Addison County to Ticonderoga, N.Y.
ADDISON COUNTY — When they announced the winner in the best Animated Short Film category at the 85th Academy Awards ceremony Sunday night there was a particularly loud shout of joy at a home in West Addison.
It was the home of Helen and Ed Kahrs, where family and friends cheered for the Kahrs’ son, John, who won the Oscar for his film “Paperman.”
“It was pretty surreal,” said Lee Kahrs, a Salisbury resident and older sister of John Kahrs.
NEW HAVEN / PENSACOLA, Fla. — Tyler McGuire, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, on Jan. 25 received his helicopter pilot wings at Whiting Naval Air Station, Florida, near Pensacola.
Present were McGuire’s parents, Ed and Mary McGuire of New Haven, as well as his oldest brother, Matthew McGuire of Malvern, Pa., and his Uncle Jack and Aunt Sharon McGuire of Winter Park, Fla.
MONKTON — On Town Meeting Day, Monkton voters will be asked to consider a $1 million bond to fund the construction of a new town hall and library on the 5-acre parcel of land on Monkton Ridge that the town purchased with funds raised through a 2006 bond. Town officials say the current town hall and library are insufficient for Monkton’s growing needs.
VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Feb. 19 approved a new letter of intent between the city and Encore Redevelopment that focuses on putting a solar array on a small city-owned parcel near the Canal Street Vergennes-Panton Water District office.
