FERRISBURGH — Addison County’s third-largest town has one two-person race to be decided on March 5 — and the chairwoman of the selectboard is the one facing the challenge.
After 12 years of service, longtime selectboard head Loretta Lawrence is squaring off against a two-time Democratic candidate for the Vermont House of Representatives, Arabella Holzapfel, for a three-year term.
This week’s community forum was submitted by four Vergennes aldermen: Bill Benton, Joe Klopfenstein, Randy Ouellette, and Renny Perry, who chairs the Police Station Planning Committee.
Last summer, while opera house patrons waited in line to purchase tickets to an event in the downstairs atrium, a Vergennes police officer entered with two people in handcuffs and passed by the line of anxious people to enter the office.
HANCOCK/RIPTON — The Panther ski team finished in third place this past weekend at the 90th annual Middlebury College winter carnival. Vermont won the event with 933 points, followed by Dartmouth (859), Middlebury (766) and New Hampshire (734).
This week’s writer is Fred Baser, who founded Bristol Financial Services in 1987. He ran as a Republican for the Vermont House in Addison-4 District in 2010.
The Vermont Republican Party has an identity crisis. What has caused the party’s image problems? Who are Vermont Republicans? What can the party do to change the current situation?
My hairdresser passed on to me a bit of wisdom she had learned from a television talk show with the psychologist Dr. Phil: “If you’re worried about what other people think of you, don’t, because they aren’t.”
(For the record, here is the quote from Philip McGraw I found on Google afterward: “You wouldn’t worry so much about what other people thought about you if you knew how seldom they did.”)
ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are investigating the Feb. 15 burglary of a home on Jersey Street in Addison during which the culprit stole a variety of personal property, plus items with the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife insignia. Police said the stolen items — a Deputy F&W badge, collar brass and a tie clip — belong to one of the victims, Deputy Warden Eugene Stearns.
The total value of the stolen property is estimated at $8,000, according to police.
VERGENNES — Police said drug charges are possible following a Feb. 12 North Main Street incident in which they responded to help Vergennes Area Rescue Squad personnel deal with a man who was apparently overdosing on a drug.
Police said when they drove up a man and a woman were outside their car, and the man was obviously ailing. Police allege he admitted he was having a bad reaction to some heroin he had taken, and VARS took him to Porter Hospital.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Anthony C. Williams, 43, of Troy, N.Y., for possession of marijuana (5.33 ounces) following a stop for speeding on Court Street on Feb. 15. Police lodged Williams at the Marble Valley Correctional Center in Rutland.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Investigated a noise complaint in the Court Square area on Feb. 11.
• Served a no-trespass notice on Feb. 11 on a person who was not wanted on Mary Hogan Elementary School grounds.
