Route 116 paving will delay some drivers in Bristol, Starksboro next week

STARKSBORO/BRISTOL — Drivers may encounter delays when traveling along Route 116 between Bristol and Starksboro next week as repaving of the highway continues.

Construction officials said that the week of Oct. 23 will mark the last week of paving for the six-and-a-half-mile section of road between Bristol village near the Lord’s Prayer Rock to just south of Robinson School in Starksboro village. Final paving is scheduled to start Monday in Bristol and progress north, weather permitting.

Police on lookout for those who made criminal racial threats in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are voicing concern about what they described as three recent, separate reports of “racial epithets directed at non-white pedestrians.”

In one case, police said a white man riding in a passing car allegedly shouted a racist insult at a pedestrian. In the other cases, it was a white man who allegedly approached pedestrians and shouted racist insults at them, according to police.

ACSD readies for budget challenge; level funding could mean $2.2 million in cuts

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District board on Monday asked administrators to draft a level-funded fiscal year 2019 budget for the district’s nine public schools, a spending level that officials said would require roughly $2.2 million in cuts due to contracted personnel expenses and other fixed costs.

Monkton asks Mt. Abe bond questions

MONKTON — Some citizens at Monday’s Addison Northeast Supervisory Union information session on a proposed $35 million school building bond were all for it. But a question about the cost to taxpayers proved to be a sticking point for some at the meeting.

Attendees wrestled with the statement by supporters of the Mount Abraham Union High School renovation plan that the proposed 2017 $35 million bond would result in a smaller tax increase than the proposed 2014 $32.6 million bond that voters defeated.

Local woodworkers toil to aid Town Hall Theater

MIDDLEBURY — A group of local woodworkers has transformed an 85-year-old pile of cherry wood planks into some stunning furniture, artwork and even a guitar, items that will soon be sold next week to benefit Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater (THT).

Creating art a pressing matter in Vergennes

VERGENNES — Heavy equipment and fine art don’t always go together like, say, peanut butter and jelly, but on Saturday a steamroller in the Kennedy Brothers parking lot on Main Street in Vergennes lured artists from as far away as Burlington and Barre.

Specifically, printmakers showed up, and even more specifically printmakers with bigger pieces that require major pressure to compress two pieces of plywood together to transfer ink from larger wood or linoleum blocks onto paper.

Bristol-area fire departments launch food drive

BRISTOL — The 10th annual Fill the Firehouse food drive to benefit the Have A Heart Food Shelf in Bristol will take place Saturday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m.-noon.

Each Firehouse in the five-town area — Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro — will be open and accepting donations of non-perishable items. There will also be a drop off site in front of Shaw’s in Bristol.
