VERGENNES — The Vermont Department of Corrections announced that a Vergennes man and a Rutland man escaped state custody on Wednesday while on a work crew outside of prison. Within a few hours the men were apprehended.

ADDISON COUNTY — Hurricane Sandy, demoted to a post-tropical cyclone designation before it hit the state, blew through Vermont late Monday night and early Tuesday morning leaving clear blue skies and temperatures in the mid-60s in its wake, and Addison County residents relatively unscathed.

LINCOLN — An investigation by Vermont state game wardens has let to a 25-year-old Starksboro man being charged with taking a moose out of season.
Game Warden Robert Currier and Sgt. George Scribner responded on Oct. 5 to a report of a moose found dead on Guthrie Road in Lincoln. The wardens determined the moose had been illegally shot. Vermont’s firearms moose hunting season was Oct. 20-25 this year.
Further investigation led authorities to cite Shaun E. Rublee of Starksboro in the killing of the moose.
MIDDLEBURY — It was almost two years ago that Beth Pearce was appointed to the position of state treasurer.
Now the Barre Democrat wants to earn the job at the polls on Nov. 6, when she faces Republican challenger Wendy Wilton, the Rutland City treasurer (see relates story).
FERRISBURGH — A transient man serving a lifetime driving ban for alcohol-related offenses crashed his car into a trees off Sand Road in Ferrisburgh on Oct. 27, injuring himself in the process.
Vermont State Police cited Kenneth A. Jennings Jr., 49, for driving under the influence and driving with a criminally suspended license. Police said he was driving a 1990 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Sand Road when he lost control of the vehicle and went off the west side of the road, colliding with a moderate-size tree.
MIDDLEBURY — Rutland City Treasurer Wendy Wilton likes a challenge. So after helping her hometown get its once-disheveled fiscal house in order, the Rutland Republican now has her sights set on the state treasurer’s office. On Nov. 6, she hopes to unseat incumbent state Treasurer Beth Pearce, a Barre Democrat (see related story).
“This is the first time the treasurer’s office has been a competitive race in 20 years,” Wilton said during a recent interview with the Addison Independent. “There are some big issues at stake.”
BRISTOL — Just a few years after a recession-induced slump prompted the closure of several Main Street businesses, downtown Bristol is making a comeback.
This summer marked the opening of Lulu’s ice cream shop by the owners of Mary’s Restaurant, Danielle Smith’s Little Babycakes baby clothing store, and Rory Jackson’s painting studio and gallery space.
