Prosecutor to lose three key staffers

Potential new players emerge on Middlebury hydro scene

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury has withdrawn from a non-binding agreement with the Holm family for development of a hydroelectric project at the Otter Creek Falls.

This opens the door for other entities that have recently expressed interest in harnessing the immense power potential at one of the downtown’s most scenic locations.

Deer season opening boasts solid numbers

ADDISON COUNTY — Opening weekend of 2018’s deer rifle season — this past Saturday and Sunday — did not approach 2017’s near-record start, but the season got off to a solid beginning with 175 bucks weighed at Addison County wildlife reporting stations.

Opening weekend of 2017 saw 242 deer weighed on the way to a rifle season total of 554, part of the year’s local post-2005 record of 1,089 deer taken in all seasons.

VUHS 'Workshop' allows students to pursue projects on their own

VERGENNES — As the bell rings to begin 8th block at Vergennes Union High School, a dozen students head out into the community rather than into the classroom, all embarking on a separate project and each doing so for credit in a new project-based learning class.

They are enrolled in a pilot class called Project Workshop that allows students at VUHS to study topics that interest them, and they say it is unlike any other classroom experience.

Allison Coyne Carroll advocates for the arts

MIDDLEBURY — Ever wonder just how the Middlebury College Performing Arts Series books such incredible and diverse performers?  Her name is Allison Coyne Carroll. If you don’t already know, Carroll is the director of the Middlebury Performing Arts Series. She’s been at the helm since ’97, and she’s the one who brings all those fabulous performers from across the globe to the Robison Hall stage at the Mahaney Center for the Arts.

Community Barn offers $500K for college's Stone Mill

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously agreed to waive the town’s right of first refusal to acquire the “Stone Mill” building at 3 Mill St., thus freeing Middlebury College to sell the historic structure to Community Barn Ventures (CBV) for a sum of $500,000.

Rough Cut restaurant closes after one-year run

MIDDLEBURY — The Rough Cut restaurant has closed its doors at 51 Main St. in Middlebury after a one-year run, with co-founder Ben Wells saying the enterprise simply wasn’t making enough money to survive — even with a rent subsidy from Middlebury College.

Wells also cited the challenges of juggling family and professional commitments.

Baser shares thoughts on election defeat

BRISTOL — Rep. Fred Baser, R-Bristol, won’t request a recount of votes cast in the Nov. 6 Addison-4 House race. He chalked up his defeat to effective campaigning on the part of his challengers along with what he believes was a statewide anti-GOP sentiment heading into a general election that saw three Addison County Republicans turned out of office.
