ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school basketball action earlier this week, Otter Valley and Middlebury picked up road wins, while Vergennes lost at home.
The Commodores also hosted Missisquoi on Tuesday; see story.
The 9-9 Tigers were also set to visit Mount Abraham on Wednesday after the deadline for this issue of the Independent. The 4-14 Eagles will conclude their season with a visit to St. Albans on Friday night; they will open the Division II postseason on the road.
ADDISON COUNTY — The Division II girls’ basketball playoffs got under way Tuesday, when 11th-seeded Vergennes bowed out with a loss at No. 6 Lake Region, 81-41.
When the Vermont Principals’ Association released pairings on Monday, Mount Abraham (15-4) was, as expected, awarded the No. 1 seed.
But the Eagles were idle on Tuesday because two teams, including No. 16 Middlebury (1-19) elected not to participate in the postseason.
JERICHO — The Middlebury Union High School dance team took third place on Saturday in Hip Hop at the NVAC championship meet, which was held at Mount Mansfield Union High School.
The competition was the last before this weekend’s state championship event, which is set for Vergennes Union High School on Saturday.
On Saturday, the Tiger team will compete in both the Hip Hop and Jazz categories, although on Saturday MUHS danced in just Hip Hop.
There is something about evergreens bent and laden under a thick quilt of fresh snow. Especially spruces and firs and hemlocks. To say it was a feeling of waiting would not be quite right. Waiting so often implies impatience. But the woods were not impatient. Rather it was a feeling of tranquility.
RIPTON — Two Frost Mountain Nordic Club skiers have been named to the 2014 New England Junior National Team’s under-16 group, Cornwall’s Sophie Hodges and Middlebury’s Nick Wilkerson. They were named after the last Eastern Cup competitions, held this past weekend in New Hampshire.
N.Y./VERMONT — Addison County’s two youth swim teams competed at different places in early February.
The Addison Otter Swim Team with their coach Peter Bicknell was in Clifton Park, N.Y., on Sunday, Feb. 9, competing in the Piranhas Pentathlon. Also that weekend, the Middlebury Aquatic Club swam at the 2014 New England Regional Swim Championship Meet, which was held at Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vt.
MIDDLEBURY — Both the Middlebury Union High School girls’ and boys’ hockey teams faced crucial season-ending Division II games on Wednesday night after the deadline for this issue of the Independent.
VERGENNES — Vergennes police issued two citations this past weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The first came on Saturday night after they received a tip during the weekend snowstorm from Vermont State Police, who were helping motorists whose cars had slid off the road in Panton. A citizen who was also helping the motorists told them two women in a car that drove by were smoking marijuana, and VSP alerted Vergennes police.
