MIDDLEBURY — Katie Mandigo scored in overtime to lift No. 2 Middlebury to a 3-2 victory over visiting No. 4 Elmira on Saturday in a rematch of the 2013 NCAA Division III championship game.
Elmira tallied the lone goal of the opening period when Ashley Ryan scored at 13:38 on a pass following a wraparound bid by Tanis Lamoureux. Later in the period, Elmira’s Brooke Wilgosh shot from between the circles but Middlebury goalie Annabelle Jones (21 stops) made a great glove save just under the crossbar.
BURLINGTON — Vergennes and Mount Abraham union high school athletes posted strong performances at Saturday’s Division II indoor track meet at the University of Vermont.
Vergennes junior Chris Castillo placed in five events, while senior Alix Kauffman and junior Sebby Crowell placed in two events each, senior Matteo Palmer earned a second-place finish, and juniors Ally Stearns and Paige Stolen each placed in one event.
ADDISON COUNTY — Both the Mount Abraham and Middlebury union high school boys’ basketball teams came up short on southern road trips on Tuesday, while the Vergennes boys saw their only game postponed.
Otter Valley was set to visit Poultney on Wednesday after the deadline for this edition of the Independent. Vergennes was set to host Fair Haven on Monday; that game was postponed until Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School girls’ basketball team broke through for its first win on Tuesday, 34-30 at the expense of visiting Mill River.
Laura Roberts scored eight to lead OV, and three other Otters tallied six apiece as they edged MRU, which dipped to 4-3. The Otters improved to 1-3.
Two other local girls’ basketball games scheduled for Monday were postponed due to bad weather. Vergennes was to play at Mount Abraham, and that game was moved to Jan. 15 at 6 p.m.

VERGENNES — This past weekend’s icy, snowy weather kept Vergennes police busy: On Saturday alone, city police responded to three accidents.
Two were within or near city limits. A car slid off Panton Road, and another minor accident occurred on Route 22A right on the Vergennes-Panton line. Also that evening, Vergennes police helped the Addison County Sheriff’s Department at the scene of a one-car accident in Panton on Route 22A.
ADDISON COUNTY — A Starksboro woman was killed in a one-car crash on Big Hollow Road in Starksboro on Sunday morning.
Vermont State Police reported that Stephanie D. Patsos, 23, was driving a 2001 Saturn SL on Big Hollow Road around 11:20 a.m. when the car traveled left of center and down an embankment on the south side of the roadway.
Patsos, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the vehicle in the crash, police reported, and she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on Jan. 3 cited Bethann Bell, 49, of Hinesburg on suspicion of driving under the influence after Bell was involved in a two-vehicle accident near Case Street and Quarry Road at 5:58 p.m. that Friday. They also cited her for driving with a suspended license.
Bell was processed, cited, released and is due in court at a later date.
