Trent Roleau, Hero

Posted on August 2, 2010 | Blog Category:

I never thought my personal hero would be younger than me. But I've come to believe that Trent Roleau, 21, is either Addison County's incarnation of Achilles or a modern day Perseus. I'm not quite sure which.

Back in the day he led the Mount Abe basketball team to a state championship. More recently, I profiled him as part of my Making a Life in Addison County series, and he told me about his plans to start a small-scale diversified farm in Lincoln. Intrepid stuff.

Below is a Spanish translation of a July 19 article, Mexican officials visit Middlebury. Over 100 Mexican immigrants met with consulate officials in a Middlebury church to apply for passports and "matricula" residency cards. Various local organizations were also on hand to offer legal advice, health care and domestic abuse counseling. Special thanks to J.P. Allen for helping with this translation.

Men’s lax: Tufts is next

OK, bring on the Jumbos.

On Wednesday at 4 p.m., the 13-5 Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team will face host Tufts (17-1) in an NCAA Division III quarterfinal. The Panthers earned that right by taking what tournament organizers gave them: a first-round home game last week (check, a 10-6 win over Goucher, making its NCAA debut) and a second-round road game against a team they had already beaten this season (check, a 16-8 win on Saturday vs. RPI).

On the Ball: Men’s lax wins; RPI next

As expected, the Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team held serve on Wednesday in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament, defeating visiting Goucher, 10-6.

Before getting to details of that game, let’s look ahead: The 12-5 Panthers will visit 14-2 Rensselaer (to avoid typos henceforth referred to as RPI) on Saturday for a second-round match-up. The game is a rematch of an April 20 contest, also played in beautiful downtown Troy, N.Y., won by the Panthers, 9-6.

Men’s lax NCAA draw

For the first time, on Sunday the Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team lost a NESCAC championship game, 13-12 at Tufts. No doubt the Panthers are still kicking themselves for losing that 11-7 lead they held late in the third period against the 16-1 Jumbos, who were ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III.

View from the Borderland: Remembering Brandon's quarrying history

Posted on April 23, 2010 | Blog Category:
By Rebecca Reimers

It seems as if Brandon’s quarrying history has been reborn with the Route 7 road work just south of town. Unlike in the 1800s, when Brandon enjoyed its heyday as a marble quarry center, the work is now being conducted with enormous excavators and front-end bucketloaders, the kind my young boys love to watch in videos. The dump trucks lined up and waiting to be loaded are size of those we see at Omya’s open house each year.

On the Ball: Spring schedules: Your results may vary

And so it (spring schedule changing) begins

Never mind the sap buckets, first thunderstorms or the Red Sox equipment truck heading to Florida, the surest sign of spring in these parts comes when the local high schools start juggling their schedules.

“Where are your kids from?”

When you are a pale-skinned mom with two brown-skinned children, you get asked this question on a surprisingly frequent basis in casual conversations in all kinds of settings. In adoption circles, we refer to these people as “supermarket strangers,” people who don’t know us or our children but ask rather invasive and personal questions without much preamble.

PANTHER MEN TO HOST PLATTSBURGH IN NCAA TOURNEY

The Panther men’s hockey team’s roll continues. Middlebury made it 12 wins in 13 games and improved to 19-4-4 with a 3-2 win at Bowdoin in the NESCAC playoff final on Sunday. Mathieu Dubuc (he’s been hot) scored twice to give the Panthers a 2-0 first period lead, and after the Polar Bears tied it in the third, Charlie Townsend scored the tie-breaker on a breakaway in the final two minutes.
