FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard and more than 30 residents at a Tuesday meeting at the town office building backed a plan to install traffic lights and a crosswalk at the intersection of Route 7 with Old Hollow and Stage roads.

Vermont Agency of Transportation officials estimated it would cost about $500,000, which they say federal funds would pay for because the project would address safety concerns.

By John S. McCright

NEW HAVEN — For the second time in two weeks a coyote with rabies was identified in Addison County.

A New Haven man shot and killed a coyote when it charged him in his yard this past Thursday, according to Vermont wildlife officials. That came 10 days after a coyote attacked a man and woman outside their Salisbury home, and the man shot the animal.

State Department of Health officials confirmed that the coyotes in both cases suffered from rabies.

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Hogan Elementary School 6th-grader Heath Odell and a handful of his classmates darted to the Elderly Services Inc. music room last Friday morning, where they each picked an elderly partner whom they led to the center of the welcoming space.

While musician Judd Markowski squeezed out a lively tune on his accordion, the children tenderly clasped their partners’ hands and gently guided them in dance while seniors too frail to join in beamed from chairs along the sideline.

New Haven kayak ledges race, winner CMYK.jpg

BRISTOL — The temperatures were up on this past Saturday afternoon for the 11th annual New Haven Ledges kayak race down the New Haven River in Bristol, and so were the water levels.

Forty-nine whitewater paddling competitors dipped in at the starting gate just above Eagle Park on the Lincoln Road before plunging into a 1.3-mile course that required them to navigate waterfalls of up to 15 feet in height — that one’s called “The Toaster.” Overall they would drop around 130 feet in elevation in a little more than a minute and a half.

MIDDLEBURY — Local businessman Tony Neri is targeting May 15 for reopening the long-dormant Greg’s Meat Market at 3 Elm St. in Middlebury, and that’s just one of the entrepreneurial irons the 78-year-old currently has in the fire.

Neri has also applied for permission from the Middlebury Development Review Board to repair and expand the former Desabrais Laundry headquarters at 55 Middle Road and divide it into as many as four spaces for “mixed-commercial ventures,” including potentially retail stores, a restaurant, or even a small brewery.

VERGENNES — Vergennes will get a new $331,000 salt and sand shed this summer, thanks largely to a $267,000 grant that Vergennes City Manager Matt Chabot announced at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

Update: After publication of this story, Chabot contacted the Independent and said construction remains on "the fast track," but that he had since heard from the Vermont Agency of Transportation that funding will not be forthcoming in time for the work to be completed this summer.

VERGENNES — You just never know when you’ll catch the theater bug. For Elisa Van Duyne it happened when she was in third grade.

“My mom took me to see Bob Fosse’s ‘Dancing’ — it was my first Broadway show,” remembered Van Duyne, who’d been dancing since she was four and a half. “After the show, I remember, I turned to my mom and said: ‘Mom, I’m going to be on that stage someday.’”

And sure enough, she was.
