VERGENNES — Vergennes officials have begun taking steps they believe will lead to safer downtown crosswalks for pedestrians and schoolchildren.

At the Nov. 29 city council meeting, aldermen agreed the city’s Water Tower Fund could be used to pay for some improvements, possibly sooner than later, and added Aldermen Matt Chabot and Mark Koenig to a task force that is looking at ways to improve pedestrian safety.

MIDDLEBURY — When the final bell ends each school day at Middlebury Union High School, Tristan Woods could easily walk home. But the 9th-grader more often than not takes a detour to what many are describing as the “new-and-improved” teen center at 77 Mary Hogan Drive.

“I enjoy this center,” Woods said last week while playing a video game on one of the center’s computers. “This center is a little more welcoming. There’s entertainment, and nice people.”

MIDDLEBURY — Fieldwork has taken on a new meaning for Middlebury College students enrolled in this fall’s Environmental Studies senior seminar.

Nineteen students are taking an in-depth look at Vermont’s dairy industry by working with local farmers and organizations such as the University of Vermont’s Extension Service, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to create reports and other end-of-course products with real-world applications.

Town Hall Theater fundraiser links woodworkers with old cherry planks

Posted on December 5, 2016 |
By John Flowers

CherryWood9376.jpg

SALISBURY — Town Hall Theater officials are giving area woodworkers a plum assignment using some well-seasoned cherry planks. It’s pretty straightforward; use the wood to make a fine piece of furniture or artwork, have it displayed at the Middlebury theater, and then harvest 50 percent of the proceeds once it is sold.

The other half of the sales price will go to the theater to help fortify its operating budget.

VERMONT — During her 40-minute commute from Vergennes to Shelburne, Karen Chickering sings. A soprano for Vermont’s one and only jazz a cappella group, called Maple Jam, the drive offers her an ideal window of time to perfect her part before weekly rehearsal.

Chickering said she doesn’t care who’s watching.

“I don’t notice,” she said, smiling. “Both hands are on the wheel.”

STARKSBORO — Starksboro resident Lausanne Allen had a little something else to be thankful for this Thanksgiving: her home didn’t burn down.

As they exited the house on Frank Orvis Road to join friends down the street for their Thanksgiving feast, she and husband Brian Anderson noticed smoke pouring out of their adjacent workshop building.

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Sheriff Don Keeler is drawing criticism from some state officials for using some of his department’s funds during the Nov. 8 election to back his preferred candidate for high bailiff, an official who has the power to arrest the sheriff and potentially replace that person if he or she is unable to perform the duties of that office.

ADDISON COUNTY — Freezers throughout Addison County are packed with venison, and in many local homes that dish probably served as the main course on Thanksgiving.

That’s because the 2016 rifle season in Addison County was easily the most successful since 2005, when the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife banned shooting two-point “spikehorn” bucks during Vermont’s 16-day November rifle season.
