House candidates in Bristol area debate

Mount Abe bond proposal stirs strong emotions

BRISTOL — With a vote on a bond to fund a renovation of Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School looming, a large number of residents of the five-town area have taken pen in hand (metaphorically) to urge their neighbors to support or reject the proposal.

Shumlin outlines campaign priorities

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin cited adding more jobs, property tax reform, affordable health care and cleaning up Lake Champlain as his top priorities for the next biennium should he be elected to a third consecutive two-year term on Nov. 4.

Shumlin, a Putney Democrat, faces opposition from Republican Scott Milne and several independent and third-party candidates this year. He took some time out last week during his travels for a phone interview with the Addison Independent.

Vergennes students learn about local foods

VERGENNES — With the help and direction of a Farm to School Team and a Farm to School Planning Grant, the entire 8th grade team at Vergennes Union Middle School, Team Phoenix, is engaged in a six-week local foods unit.

Team Phoenix with the help of their teachers and staff members from the Willowell Foundation beginning in early October embarked on an interdisciplinary experience learning about food systems — local and national.

MIDDLEBURY — As the CEO of Milne Travel, Republican Scott Milne has sent many people to exotic locations throughout the world.

The North Pomfret Republican is now hoping to book a destination of his own, and it’s very exotic: Montpelier, where he hopes to serve as Vermont’s governor. He faces two-term incumbent Gov. Peter Shumlin, a Putney Democrat.

Middlebury College student shines a light on depression

MIDDLEBURY — As a 17-year-old senior at Middlebury Union High School, Hannah Quinn attempted suicide. No one knew what had happened, and for two years she did not share her ordeal with friends or family.

Now, Quinn is speaking out about depression and suicide. Currently a junior at Middlebury College, Quinn hopes to open a dialogue on mental health issues on campus.

Initially hesitant to share her story, Quinn said she was inspired by a fellow student who shared her story with depression.

On the move: Osborne House leaving downtown to clear way for new town office

MIDDLEBURY — For 198 years, Middlebury College’s Osborne House at 77 Main St. has been a constant feature of Middlebury’s downtown landscape.

But early next Monday morning the recently uprooted two-story home will make its improbable journey along the Cross Street Bridge to a vacant, town-owned lot on the east side of the intersection of Cross and Water streets.

Japanese students study green design at career center

MIDDLEBURY — Sixteen Japanese students crossed an expansive ocean to get to the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center this past Thursday. And while they had made their crossing by plane, it still seemed somewhat a propos that the focus of their visit would be some boats being studied and replicated by their counterparts at the Middlebury vocational-technical center.
