Farmers to Shumlin: Lay off Current Use

ADDISON COUNTY — Gov. Peter Shumlin has made cleaning up Lake Champlain a top priority. To do that, he proposed in his Jan. 8 inaugural address to make changes to the state’s Current Use tax program to penalize farmers who pollute waterways.

The Agency of Agriculture said denying Current Use tax breaks to offenders would add another enforcement tool to the state, which is cracking down on pollution into its waterways.

Board hopes VUHS budget to correct course

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board on Monday adopted a roughly $10.47 million spending plan that administrators said will begin to dig VUHS out of its deep financial hole and would more accurately reflect the cost of operating the school after years of underfunded spending.

To reach those goals, the budget calls for an 11 percent increase of about $1 million over the VUHS budget Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters approved this past spring.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College got a new look last week.

The 215-year-old institution unveiled a new “brand identity” that plays up the iconic marble and limestone buildings while better integrating its increasingly diverse programs under the Middlebury name.

“Middlebury has, over the last 100 years, built itself into a more complex institution that meets the educational needs of many types of students around the world,” the school said in a statement.

New K9 joins Vergennes police force

VERGENNES — Officer Adam O’Neill, a three-and-a-half year veteran of the Vergennes Police Department, and his canine side-kick, K9 Kane, on Nov. 21 graduated from the 16-week Police Canine Patrol School held at the Vermont Police Canine Academy in Pittsford.

Vergennes house fire leaves six homeless

VERGENNES — Vergennes firefighters and members of three other departments spent seven hours starting just after 1 a.m. on Thursday morning fighting a blaze that gutted most of a three-unit apartment building at 17-19 White St.

No one was reported to be hurt, but property damage was extensive. The Red Cross was on scene Thursday, meeting with the six people who lost their homes in the fire and providing financial assistance for food, clothing, shoes, seasonal garments and lodging.

Mt. Abe's Moody to represent Vt. at Senate program in Washington

BRISTOL — A Mount Abraham Union High School senior was selected from a pool of Vermont high school students to represent the state at a nationwide conference in Washington, D.C., this spring.

Isabelle Moody of Monktonand a Brattleboro student will form Vermont’s delegation to the United States Senate Youth Program, a conference created by the federal government in 1962 for exceptional students interested in careers in public service.

Highway fatalities in 2014

MONTPELIER — Preliminary reports indicate a significant reduction in fatalities on Vermont’s highways in 2014 according to the Vermont Highway Safety Alliance (VHSA). The unofficial total of fatalities due to motor vehicle crashes in Vermont for 2014 was 43 (32 vehicle operators, six passengers and five pedestrians). This is a 38-percent reduction from 2013, which saw 70 fatalities on Vermont’s highways. Of the 43 fatalities, 46 percent were unbelted, about 25 percent involved drugs or alcohol and about 25 percent involved speeding.
