MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday gave its legislative delegation a brief but sharply worded wish list for the 2015 session: Give us a rotary at the intersection of Route 7 and Exchange Street, along with education finance reform.

The board conveyed that message to the four Democratic lawmakers taking part in the meeting: Sen. Christopher Bray of New Haven, Sen. Claire Ayer of Addison, Rep. Betty Nuovo of Middlebury, and Rep.-elect Amy Sheldon of Middlebury.

By Zach Despart

BRISTOL — About 20 members of the Bristol Fire Department crammed into the basement of Holley Hall Monday evening to hear how the selectboard planned to fix their crumbling headquarters on North Street.

Firefighters expressed a general sense of frustration that the town has not yet approved a plan for a new firehouse structure, and that the current firehouse does not meet the needs of the department.

MIDDLEBURY — It was New Year’s Eve 1998 when Cheryl Barrows got her first taste of heroin.

“I met this ‘wonderful’ guy in Rutland who put a needle in my arm and said, ‘This is wonderful stuff,’” recalled Barrows. “I looked out of the window, saw a pink cloud and my pain was gone. I felt nothing.”

WEYBRIDGE — It’s not unusual for students in this day and age to be warned of the challenges they will face in heating their homes in the future as fossil fuels become more scarce and expensive.

Weybridge Elementary School students are not only being taught about the challenges; they are being asked to become a part of the solution.

Brandon police organize war on heroin

Brandon police war on heroin Chief Brickell.JPG

BRANDON — Drug dealers are people, too. That is a cold, hard fact of law enforcement that is frustrating many Brandon residents as known drug dealers continue to operate locally.

With the Brandon Cares community group gaining momentum in the local fight against heroin and opiate abuse, Brandon residents are learning more about addiction and treatment challenges. But they also question why, if local police know who is dealing heroin in Brandon, more arrests aren’t made to combat the problem.

National forest considers backcountry skiing plan

Posted on December 8, 2014 |
By Evan Johnson

GOSHEN — Every winter, skiers and snowboarders venture into the woods and hillsides in search of untracked snow. In the future, skiers in southern Addison County may not have to venture far.

This winter the U.S. Forest Service is considering a proposal to develop four backcountry skiing glades totaling approximately 210 acres on land in the Green Mountain National Forest in the towns of Goshen, Rochester and Chittenden.

McKibben, Bill '09 Color.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Bill McKibben, one of America’s highest profile climate activists, is stepping down as the board chair of 350.org, the environmental organization he co-founded.

He’ll remain involved with the group that he and a group of Middlebury College students started in 2007 as a “senior adviser,” a role he said entails less day-to-day managing and more large-scale project planning.

Musicians to perform in support of food shelf

Clint2732.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — It’s not unusual for aspiring musicians to simply play for food or drink as compensation for a gig in order to get a foot in the entertainment door. Clint Bierman and his band, The Grift, are fortunate enough to have the talent and reputation that ensures their performances are rewarded with a paycheck rather than free beer or leftovers from a buffet table.

But on Monday, Dec. 22, Bierman and around 15 other well-known Vermont acts will go back to playing for food — this time for the benefit of others who might otherwise go hungry.

Cast-off clothing a hot commodity

SwapandShop2753.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — It can be tough for teens to fill out their wardrobes given the current price of clothing and the cost and hassle of getting to some of the regional fashion hubs.

Jutta Miska, co-director of the Addison Central Teens organization, knows the problem well and two years ago came up with a novel way of bringing affordable clothing directly to local youths at Middlebury Union High School. It’s called the “Two-Day Clothing Swap & Shop,” and it will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and Wednesday, Dec. 10, at MUHS.

Black Lives Matter Vigil- Middlebury 12-4-14 2.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — A group of Addison County residents gathered at Middlebury’s Triangle Park this past Thursday evening to express dismay at recent grand jury decisions not to indict police officers for killing unarmed black men.
