VERGENNES — St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Vergennes has two grants in hand to fund repair of the Main Street church’s three stained-glass windows that overlook the sidewalk across from the city green. The church also has successfully applied for a grant it hopes will move forward a joint sidewalk and landscaping project.

Members of the downtown church’s Strategic Investment in Sacred Places committee are optimistic both of those projects can be done this year.

MIDDLEBURY — Chris and Chelsea Griggs got their first taste of the hospitality industry a few years ago. They had purchased a “fixer-upper” on Lake Dunmore in Salisbury, which they lovingly rehabbed and began renting out to help subsidize their investment.

But the experience turned into something much more than an income earning vacation rental.

No Refunds George & Jonny smiling cmyk.jpg

MONKTON — Anybody concerned about the “future of boys” should take a look at “No Refunds,” a vigorously playful and wonderfully messy YouTube channel created by three freshmen at Mount Abraham Union High School.

Inspired by Saturday Night Live and their favorite sports commentators, Monkton residents Jonny Armell, George Collette and (when he can make it) Tristan Parker head down to George’s mom’s basement every Tuesday afternoon, sit at a plastic conference table, hit record and let it fly.

MIDDLEBURY — Most of us probably don’t quite realize what we have in the Middlebury College Museum of Art. We say, “sure, it’s the college, of course they have an incredible museum of art” — perhaps in a similar way a New Yorker passes the MOMA with a shrug.

But it’s worth a second thought, for sure.

Abortion bill spurs emotional debate

Posted on February 7, 2019 |
By John Flowers

VERGENNES — Activists turned out in force at Monday’s legislative breakfast at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes, many, but not all, of them to deride a House bill they claimed would expand the use of abortion in Vermont.

But local lawmakers however rejected their claim, saying bill H.57 would simply recognize reproductive choice as a “fundamental freedom” and keep public entities from interfering with, or restricting, women’s existing right in Vermont to end pregnancies.

CORNWALL — Back when he was in Cornwall’s elementary school, Ian Gill — now a University of Vermont senior majoring in finance — would drive with his dad, Brian Gill, and brother Adam to watch members of his dad’s Cornwall Boxing Club battle other amateurs in the Vermont Golden Gloves competition.

Vermont boxing legend Ernie Farrar staged the annual midwinter matches, actually the Northern New England championships, in Burlington’s Memorial Auditorium.

SALISBURY — Faced with a $500,000 budget shortfall in fiscal year 2020, the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife (VDFW) is recommending closing the Salisbury Fish Culture Station at 646 Lake Dunmore Road, a facility that employs four full-time workers, attracts more than 6,000 visitors each year, and plays a key role in the state’s formidable trout breeding program that attracts anglers and fuels the state economy.

VUHS Walden Project serving as a model

Posted on February 7, 2019 |

Walden story by Marin H 6070.jpg

VERGENNES/MONKTON — On a cold November day in the woods of Monkton, students from Vermont and New York sat gathered around the fire, deeply engaged in conversation.

Each of these students was a member of an alternative-learning program from either the Green Mountain State or the Empire State. These programs, according to their organizers, share a unique approach to schooling — getting students outside and connecting them with their education in a way that desks and textbooks do not always allow.
