Ferrisburgh eyes jump in municipal spending

Posted on February 5, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents in March will be asked to approve a 2015-2016 town budget that calls for the first recent significant spending increase, a 5.6 percent hike to about $1.77 million.

Line items pushing spending higher include increased hours for town office workers, an additional road crew employee, a deficit from the current year that must be retired, and projected higher insurance and road resurfacing costs.

A life at risk, and nothing to do but wait: Bristol woman needs lung transplant

Heffernans3913.jpg

BRISTOL — Kaitlin Heffernan, like many 25-year-olds, keeps her cell phone on her at all times. But it isn’t to text friends, check emails or browse the Internet.

At any moment, any hour of the day, the Bristol resident could get a call from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, telling her to leave immediately and prepare for a double lung transplant. She’ll have just three hours to prepare for a major surgery that could take 6 to 12 hours — and will likely save her life.

Slot Canyon presentation.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Rich and Sheri Larsen will present “Exploring the Slot Canyons of Southern Utah” on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. at Ilsley Library in Middlebury.

Southern Utah is a stark and wildly beautiful land of sandstone carved into countless canyons, ranging in size from Colorado River canyons to slots so tight a person cannot fit through. The Larsens, often with accomplices from Vermont and other states, have now made a dozen trips to Utah to play in slot canyons.

Legislative Review: Sen. Claire Ayer pledges to review proposed gun law

Posted on February 5, 2015 |
By Sen. Claire Ayer

Ayer.jpg

OPINION:

What about the gun bill, S.31?

There’s been some speculation on Front Porch Forum regarding my motives for co-sponsoring a bill that does three things: It puts Vermont in compliance with the federal law that requires Vermont to enter into a federal database (1) the names of certain violent felons and (2) the names of persons who have been judged in a court of law to be a danger to themselves or others. The third thing it does is require a background check during the sale of all weapons, while allowing for family members to gift guns to each other.

Backers see solar as money maker

Posted on February 2, 2015 |

SolarArray.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — Last year, the Public Service Board approved 26 projects in Addison County larger than 15 kilowatts, the largest of which were a 2.2-megawatt array in Middlebury and a 2.0-megawatt array in Bridport.

As workers proceed with construction of these arrays, soon to be among the largest in the state, many Addison County residents are wondering who’s making money from these large arrays. Landowners get revenue from leases, municipalities get tax revenue, construction firms get business — but how do investors in solar projects benefit?

Group questions Vergennes snow dumping methods

Posted on February 2, 2015 |
By Zach Despart

SnowPile3305.jpg

VERGENNES — Piles of snow, packed together in rows like moguls, occupy the parking lot of Falls Park on the south bank of the Otter Creek below Vergennes’ majestic falls.

That’s where the city stores excess snow cleared from downtown sidewalks and roadways. When the snow melts, it flows into the Otter Creek and then into Lake Champlain.

Face Off Against Breast Cancer raised hopes, money

Face off_0005.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Organizers of the annual Face Off Against Breast Cancer were happy both with the results of their hockey tournament on the Memorial Sports Center ice on Jan. 24 and 25 and in the event’s success in achieving its larger fundraising goal.

Eleven women’s hockey teams in all competed on that Saturday and Sunday, three “competitive level” and two “novice level” groups on the first day, and a half-dozen “recreational level” squads on Sunday,

Posted on January 29, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Town Meeting Day ballot will offer two contested races, including a rematch of a 2012 contest decided by one vote, and a petitioned article.

It will not include Senior Alderman Randy Ouellette, who did not file a petition by Monday’s deadline and will step down after a decade.

One of the races is the second go-around between Susan Ferland and Cheryl Brinkman for the seat on the Vergennes Union Elementary School board now held by Ferland. Both are seeking a three-year term.
