Local lawmakers review the 2014 session

MONTPELIER — Local lawmakers and Gov. Peter Shumlin this week were tying a bow on what they said was a very productive 2014 session of the Vermont Legislature, one they said has paved the way for new jobs, fewer drug addicts, a higher minimum wage and a record investment in the state’s roads, bridges and culverts.

Lawmakers wrapped up their work at the Vermont Statehouse on Saturday, May 10, capping more than four months of work on a litany of issues ranging from boilerplate municipal charter changes to a $5.5 billion state budget.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents on Tuesday affirmed their support of the $6.5 million town offices-recreation center project by an 880 to 714 tally, a vote that paves the way for the two new buildings to proceed through final design, review, permitting and construction.

Tuesday’s referendum was a revote on the same project that residents had endorsed on Town Meeting Day, 915 to 798.

Young duo launches a tech startup in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A lot of first jobs after college aren’t exactly glamorous. Barista. Retail sales. Or the two most depressing words to a 22-year-old’s ear — unpaid internship.

“Creator of software startup with the potential to corner a gigantic, untapped market of consumers” is not a job listing likely to be found on Craigslist (if it is, don’t click on it; it’s probably spam).

Aurora School crafts folk art, curates Shelburne Museum exhibit

SHELBURNE/MIDDLEBURY — While it may be a school project, 12-year-old Kenneth Barkdoll makes the rules very clear:

“It’s a museum exhibit,” he said. “You’re not supposed to touch anything.”

Barkdoll is one of the curators of a new folk art exhibit at the Shelburne Museum and the sixth-grader at the Aurora School in Middlebury is quick to give a firm admonishment to anyone who gets too close to his hooked rug, a panorama of him canoeing with his father.

Natural gas pipeline to serve some in Ferrisburgh, Waltham

Posted on May 12, 2014 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Construction will begin soon on the Vermont Gas Systems pipeline extension that will serve Vergennes and run about three miles along Plank Road from a new New Haven distribution station to Route 7 and from there to the city, according to company officials.

Along the south side of Plank Road, the pipeline extension will pass through parts of Ferrisburgh and Waltham as well as New Haven, and it could serve homes in those towns, said Vermont Gas spokesman Steve Wark late last week.

SHOREHAM — Some came displaying colorful banners, bearing such slogans as “Tap lines, not gas lines,” and “Plant trees, not pipelines.”

Others recited poems and prayers.

All who walked up to the microphone spoke passionately.

Sticker shock 1.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — Groups of students from Mount Abraham and Vergennes union high schools took part in a recent “Sticker Shock” day around the county.

The purpose of Sticker Shock is to reinforce public awareness about the minimum drinking age law by placing stickers on packs of beer larger than a six-pack. The goal of this project is to discourage adults and older peers (those who are 21 or over) from providing alcohol to minors.

Brandon voters reject $3.2 million town budget in re-vote

Posted on May 8, 2014 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

BrandonBudget.jpg

BRANDON — Here we go again. Brandon residents defeated the proposed town budget on a re-vote Tuesday, 498-318.

It was a $3,218,670 proposed spending plan, with $2,613,995 to be raised by taxes, which represented a 12.2 percent tax increase.

While the original Town Meeting Day vote resulted in a 44 percent voter turnout, Tuesday’s vote only drew 29 percent of the electorate despite a mass mailing and selectboard members pounding the pavement.
