Grants to local businesses aim to protect Vermont's rural character

ADDISON COUNTY — How will Vermont ensure that the landscape is not overrun with suburban-type sprawl? One state-funded board is betting that a new cider press, an egg washer and a portable sawmill will help.

The Working Lands Enterprise Board recently awarded $300,000 in grants to 19 businesses across the state, including three in Addison County. The local recipients of grants were Windfall Orchard in Cornwall, Doolittle Farm in Shoreham and Green Mountain Hardwood in Ripton.

New creamery builds cheese business from the curd up

BRIDPORT — Cheese curds? Really? Isn’t that what’s left after you make cheese?

Julie Danyew gets that question all the time. She’s the cheesemaker at one of the newest Addison County cheese producers, Bridport Creamery, which started selling the delicious cheese curds last September.

ACSU teachers sign contract that creates salary parity at all grade levels

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union board and the three unions representing district teachers have signed off on a new, three-year agreement that affords educators average annual salary increases of around 3.6 percent and requires them to pay 15 percent of their health care premiums by the third year of the pact.

Committee chooses West St. site for Bristol firehouse

BRISTOL — The Bristol Fire Facility Site Selection Committee will recommend a location for a new town firehouse at the selectboard meeting Monday evening.

“We’re ready to go in there and bring the selectboard up to speed on where we’re at,” committee member and Bristol Fire Department Chief Brett LaRose said late last week.

Order up: Local couple takes over Steve's Diner

MIDDLEBURY — While the name above the door may change, downtown Middlebury will keep its diner. After 25 years of successful operation, owners Steve and Beth Dow have handed over the keys to Steve’s Park Diner to Caetlin Harwood and Carl Roesch.

“The National Restaurant Association figures the average age of a restaurant is between three to four years,” Steve Dow said after closing on the sale on April 14. “I figured I beat the odds.”

Mother's Day card helps to keep local moms safe

MIDDLEBURY — WomenSafe announces that Addison County artist Patricia LeBon Herb’s artwork will grace the 2014 Mother’s Day card — the 13th annual Mother’s Day card in WomenSafe’s Local Women Artist Series.

LeBon Herb started her early professional career as a graphic artist and illustrator. She later became a fine arts painter by profession. She and her husband, Guntram, live in Middlebury. They have two grown children, who have left home for college, which they attend on opposite coasts.

Leicester shooting suspect arraigned

MIDDLEBURY — Timothy Foley, the Leicester man accused of shooting his neighbor and two state troopers, was arraigned Thursday in Addison County Superior Court on two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated attempted murder.

At the request of Addison County State’s Attorney David Fenster, Judge Robert A. Mello ordered Foley held without bail.

Time running out at Statehouse for education reform bill

MIDDLEBURY — Local lawmakers on Monday were unsure whether a sweeping bill calling for expansion of public school districts would receive final legislative approval before the 2014 session concludes in about three weeks.

The bill in question is H.883, which allows the state’s current 282 school to voluntarily realign into around 50 expanded K-12 districts. Each school district would be governed by a single board and operate on a single budget.

VUHS spending plan will cut teacher jobs

VERGENNES — In a packed high school library that has become characteristic of recent board meetings, the Vergennes Union High School board on Monday evening warned a new budget that will force administrators to lay off staff.

The spending proposal totals $9,417,197, which is $316,725 less than the budget Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters rejected on Town Meeting Day. It is also less than the budget for the current fiscal year.
