National forest considers backcountry skiing plan

Posted on December 8, 2014 |
By Evan Johnson

GOSHEN — Every winter, skiers and snowboarders venture into the woods and hillsides in search of untracked snow. In the future, skiers in southern Addison County may not have to venture far.

This winter the U.S. Forest Service is considering a proposal to develop four backcountry skiing glades totaling approximately 210 acres on land in the Green Mountain National Forest in the towns of Goshen, Rochester and Chittenden.

By Zach Despart

McKibben, Bill '09 Color.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Bill McKibben, one of America’s highest profile climate activists, is stepping down as the board chair of 350.org, the environmental organization he co-founded.

He’ll remain involved with the group that he and a group of Middlebury College students started in 2007 as a “senior adviser,” a role he said entails less day-to-day managing and more large-scale project planning.

Musicians to perform in support of food shelf

Posted on December 8, 2014 |
By John Flowers

Clint2732.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — It’s not unusual for aspiring musicians to simply play for food or drink as compensation for a gig in order to get a foot in the entertainment door. Clint Bierman and his band, The Grift, are fortunate enough to have the talent and reputation that ensures their performances are rewarded with a paycheck rather than free beer or leftovers from a buffet table.

But on Monday, Dec. 22, Bierman and around 15 other well-known Vermont acts will go back to playing for food — this time for the benefit of others who might otherwise go hungry.

Cast-off clothing a hot commodity

Posted on December 8, 2014 |
By John Flowers

SwapandShop2753.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — It can be tough for teens to fill out their wardrobes given the current price of clothing and the cost and hassle of getting to some of the regional fashion hubs.

Jutta Miska, co-director of the Addison Central Teens organization, knows the problem well and two years ago came up with a novel way of bringing affordable clothing directly to local youths at Middlebury Union High School. It’s called the “Two-Day Clothing Swap & Shop,” and it will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and Wednesday, Dec. 10, at MUHS.

Black Lives Matter Vigil- Middlebury 12-4-14 2.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — A group of Addison County residents gathered at Middlebury’s Triangle Park this past Thursday evening to express dismay at recent grand jury decisions not to indict police officers for killing unarmed black men. The event, billed as a candlelight “Black Lives Matter” vigil, was one of many nationwide events urging greater police accountability and more justice for communities of color.

East Middlebury residents wary of airport upgrades

Posted on December 4, 2014 |
By John Flowers

EAST MIDDLEBURY — Vermont aviation officials are seeking federal funding to extend and widen the runway at the Middlebury State Airport. But some neighbors of the East Middlebury facility are hoping the project remains grounded due to concerns about a potential increase in air traffic and the required pruning of some buffer trees along the takeoff and landing approaches.

At issue is a proposal to lengthen the Middlebury Airport runway by 700 feet, to a total of 3,200 feet, and also widen it from the current 50 feet, to 60 feet.

Middlebury College students stand with Michael Brown

Posted on December 4, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

protest1541.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — More than 100 students, faculty and staff stood, silently, arms raised in front of Mead Chapel on the campus of Middlebury College Monday afternoon.

The time was 1:01 p.m., the same time of day that Michael Brown was shot dead by a police officer on Aug. 9 in Ferguson, Mo. The shooting of the 18-year-old black man reignited a national discussion on racism and police brutality, especially after a grand jury last week declined to bring charges against the officer, Darren Wilson.

By Zach Despart

Solars.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s been another busy year for solar firms in Vermont, and Addison County will host some of the state’s largest arrays.

As of Dec. 1, the Public Service Board had issued Certificates of Public Good to 138 projects across the state, ranging from small rooftop units to multi-acre solar arrays. Twenty-six projects are located in Addison County.

These figures don’t include residential-size projects of less than 15 kilowatts, which do not need a CPG.

Hopkins on Mayflower_8480.jpg

BRANDON — Four-year-old Renata Hopkins came running up to her guest with a giggle, and a joke

“If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring?” she asked, barely able to contain herself.

“Pilgrims!” she exclaimed with a laugh, and ran into the hallway to find the family’s 20-pound orange Tabby cat, Such-Much.
