MIDDLEBURY — With the awarding of 13 fuzzy, well-groomed teddy bears, the third annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival closed its curtains on Aug. 27, concluding what festival organizers said was the best year ever.

MNFF Artistic Director Jay Craven reported that this year’s festival featured the largest number of films screened (96), the most filmmakers to attend (over 40), and a record number of special guests. That the festival also attracted bigger audiences with high engagement also gave this year’s festival high marks.

Who didn’t love recess as a kid? Kickball, foursquare, swings, some sort of tag, mazes … whatever; it was the best part of the day, hands down. But once you leave elementary school … where does recess go?

Well, this Saturday is our lucky day, because recess is back! And this time it’s only for adults. Yup, “no kids, no pets and no teenagers with fake IDs.” Says so right on the website, recessvt.com.

MIDDLEBURY — The state Legislature this winter is likely to again debate the question of whether to legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, and the Middlebury selectboard wants to know how local residents feel about that issue.

To that end, the selectboard has prepared a survey — available on-line and through the town offices — on the issue of marijuana legalization.

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Mike Kiernan has been as busy as a bee these days. By night, he’s healing his fellow man in 12-hour shifts as a physician with Porter Hospital’s Emergency Department.

But by day, Kiernan dons a t-shirt and gloves and heads out to a solar farm where he lovingly nurtures a variety of flowers and forage aimed at attracting and feeding bees, hummingbirds and a wide variety of nature’s dwindling number of pollinators.

ADDISON COUNTY — Things are looking up — just a little bit — for Vermont’s bobolinks, thanks in part to increased acreage enrolled in Vermont’s Bobolink Project.

A grassland bird, bobolinks like to nest in open fields. They also have a propensity to return to the same fields year after year, come what may. But being birds, they’re unlikely to consult with local farmers about their haying schedules. The result?
