HANDS OFF! Know what handheld devices you can use while driving

Posted on October 6, 2014 |
By Evan Johnson

ADDISON COUNTY — As most Vermont drivers know, a new law that went into effect this past Wednesday makes it illegal to use a variety of electronic devices — including hand-held cell phones and MP3 players — while driving on Vermont roads. Violators are subject to fines and points assessed against their driving record.

In the early days, local police had not charged anyone for infractions of the law, but they said they fully intend to enforce it.

Trash district forecasts hike in recycling handling costs

Posted on October 6, 2014 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Solid Waste Management District board next month will consider a proposed 2015 budget that would maintain the same $123-per-ton tipping fee for trash, while requiring an increase in rates for clean wood and single-stream recyclables dropped off by commercial haulers at the district’s Middlebury transfer station.

The draft spending plan of $2,627,262 would also pay for a new public outreach staffer to educate area school students and other groups about solid waste and recycling programs.

MIDDLEBURY — Linda Goodspeed of Rutland is a freelance writer who lost her sight 25 years ago. Today, she uses a variety of tools to help her with everyday tasks. Her laptop computer uses a program called JAWS, for Job Access With Speech, that reads items on the computer screen to her. She uses an app on her iPhone to count denominations of money, a scanner to read mail and a barcode reader to read food labels in the pantry.

“The world has really opened up for blind people, thanks to digital technology,” she said.

Season of mists, mellow fruitfulness: Bidding adieu to garden past

Posted on October 6, 2014 |
By Judith Irven

garden FS-2946.jpg

It’s early October. The forests are ablaze in color and the valleys cloaked in morning mists. And in my garden the final flowers of the year — asters, chrysanthemums, bush clover and even the Rozanne geranium — having survived an early light frost, are sounding one last glorious hurrah for the season now ending. Any day now the first heavy killing frost will signal the end of this year’s garden.

MIDDLEBURY — Some of the state’s political pundits are claiming next month’s General Election ballot provides little chance for upsets or even tight races.

Burlington Progressive Dean Corren wants to prove the pundits wrong. The Middlebury College graduate (class of 1976) is stumping for votes in hopes of unseating incumbent Lt. Gov. Phil Scott, R-Berlin, whom the Addison Independent will also interview for an upcoming issue of the paper.

Do solar arrays qualify for current use tax benefits?

Posted on October 2, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

ADDISON COUNTY — As new solar arrays pop up around Addison County, and a litany of others await Public Service Board approval, some town officials and residents are wondering how much tax revenue these solar projects will generate.

One question many have is whether the land used for solar arrays can be enrolled in “current use,” a designation that decreases the assessment value of farm and forestland, and thus lowers property tax bills.

Century-old church gets colorful facelife

Posted on October 2, 2014 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — For more than 110 years, the majestic St. Mary’s Church has stood as a spiritual beacon at the base of the College Street ascent into the heart of the Middlebury College campus. Those who travel past the church can’t help but admire its regal stone facades and its vibrant, stained glass windows.

But what passersby haven’t seen during the past month are a litany of repairs being performed inside the church, mostly plasterwork and painting that when completed will restore the building’s expansive worship hall to its former glory.

MIDDLEBURY — Rebekah Chamberlain was disappointed when she showed up for her first week of classes as a high schooler. Last year as an eighth-grader in middle school, she’d been told she could buy locally produced Monument Farms milk in the Middlebury Union High School cafeteria.

But when lunchtime came around last month, Monument Farms milk was nowhere to be found.

“It’s, like, the best milk,” said Chamberlain, 14, of Bridport.
