Chuck Laramee.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Twenty-seven years ago, Chuck Laramie had reached his personal abyss.

A slave to alcohol and recreational drugs, he was so intoxicated one night that a police officer insisted on driving him home.

“He asked me what I was going to do when I got home, and I told him I had a loaded .38 (handgun) in my drawer and I was going to stick it in my mouth and get it all over with,” Laramie recalled. “That was my plan if it got real bad — that’s how I was going to end my addiction.”

Vorstevelds spar with Ferrisburgh over roadside tree cutting

Posted on October 8, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — At an occasionally testy Oct. 2 Ferrisburgh selectboard meeting, the owners of the Vorsteveld Farm and board members continued to spar in what is now a 17-month dispute over the farmers’ April 2017 decision to remove without permission almost 2,000 trees and a hedgerow in the town right-of-way along Arnold Bay Road.

About a dozen Ferrisburgh farmers showed up at the Tuesday meeting to support the Vorsteveld brothers and their right to cut the trees and shrubs in a three-quarter-mile stretch of road running north from Panton near Lake Champlain.

Ballet legend Wendy Whelan shares wisdom with local dancers

Posted on October 8, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

MIDDLEBURY — World-renowned ballerina Wendy Whelan’s master class at the Middlebury College Dance Theater last Wednesday was filled with lively sounds — piano and percussion, encouragement from an elite artist and plenty of laughter.

The sounds that spoke most to the magnitude of the occasion, however, were the sounds of silences broken by synchronized gestures made with great concentration: the whisper of toes across the floor; the squeak of leather slippers twisting through pirouettes.

Building a dream house on a budget

Shortly after moving to Vermont from Colorado seven years ago, Jason Mikula built a treehouse in his backyard in Killington, complete with a climbing wall, hammock and zip lines.

The treehouse, 100 square feet with a wrap-around porch, was meant for his children, now ages 8 and 10, but Mikula built it big enough so that he and his wife Polly could stand up inside and enjoy it, too.

Claudia Carl claims space for art on Middlebury's construction fence

Posted on October 8, 2018 |
By Elsie Lynn Parini

FenceArt1620.jpg

Not every artist likes to be boxed in. In fact, very few do. But for Claudia Carl, designing a mural on an 8-by-10-foot grid — er, chain link fence — with small plastic cups sounded, well, fun.

“I have always enjoyed doing designs on graph paper,” said Carl, an artist from Cornwall. “I love geometrics and I love color. Trying to figure out how to do art on the fence sounded like such a fun idea.”

Wells are drying up in three northern county towns

Posted on October 4, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

ADDISON COUNTY — The drought that continues to plague northern Vermont has begun to affect Addison County.

Residents in Ferrisburgh, Monkton and Starksboro reported that their wells have run dry.

Penny Oosterman said her well in Ferrisburgh dried up about a month ago.

“I had just bought a brand-new washer and dryer. Then one day I ran a load of laundry and nothing but dirt water came into the washer. It gunked everything up,” she said.

There hasn’t been any water since.

MIDDLEBURY — Jenn Buker on Monday reflected back to 2002, the most tumultuous year of her life.

“You have breast cancer.”

MIDDLEBURY — Feeling like you don’t belong, that no one cares.

Keeping a major problem private, to the extent that it devours you from the inside out.

These are some classic symptoms in an increasing number of Addison County children who are hurting and aren’t asking for help, according to local human services providers.

Left unchecked, these symptoms can lead to depression and descent into risky behavior — like drug addiction and self-harm, advocates noted.

MIDDLEBURY — It’s as busy as a beehive in the former Middlebury Sears Hometown Store at 383 Exchange St.

The 10,000-square-foot space, vacated by Sears this past July, is now hosting the production, shipping and warehouse functions of “Bee’s Wrap,” a fast-growing manufacturer of an all-natural alternative to plastic wrap that’s made Bristol its home for the past four years.

Brian Carpenter, owner of 383 Exchange St., confirmed the Bee’s Wrap tenancy late last week.
