ST. ALBANS — Vermont will invest millions of state and local funds in Lake Champlain cleanup efforts over the next few years as part of Vermont’s Clean Water Act passed by the Legislature this session and signed into law by Gov. Peter Shumlin in June.

To restore the quality of Lake Champlain’s waters, Vermont will have to reduce phosphorous loading in the lake by 33.8 percent.

Memoir tells of adventures mining for gold in the Klondike

Posted on August 17, 2015 |
By Joseph Brown

Klondike gold rush memoir.jpg

BRIDPORT — It all started at the Bixby Memorial Library in Vergennes, where Monkton resident and author Ivor Hughes was giving a PowerPoint-driven lecture about the Klondike Gold Rush in northwestern Canada, which reached its apex at the end of the 19th century.

At the lecture Hughes was approached by Bridport resident Gary Payne, a grandson of George G. Shaw, who in the mid-1890s ventured to the West Coast from Long Lake, N.Y., where he eventually heard of the gold rush.

Payne was excited to talk about the gold rush.

Rokeby book farming in 19th century.jpg

FERRISBURGH — Today, “eating local” is all the rage, from school cafeterias to four-star restaurants. But not that long eating local was theonlyway. It was a way of life and a matter of necessity.

Rokeby Museum announces publication of a new book: “Farming & Feasting with the Robinsons,” with text by Jesse Natha and drawings by Rowland Evans Robinson. This unusual pairing — the work of an artist who died more than 100 years ago illustrating the words of a contemporary writer — works together seamlessly.

Shade adds tranquility to a garden

Posted on August 17, 2015 |
By Judith Irven

Garden.png

It’s a common lament: “My garden is shady and boring. All I can grow are hostas!”

I beg to differ. I delight in shady garden spaces — cool, tranquil places for people, and home for plenty of interesting plants.

Dick and I love to retreat, cup of tea in hand, to a favorite garden bench under the trees, a private outdoor room complete with leafy ceiling, richly patterned carpet and a view to the sunny border beyond.

Transportation secretary pans notion of railroad bypass

Posted on August 13, 2015 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Transportation Secretary Sue Minter on Tuesday took the air out of a trial balloon some Middlebury residents had been floating about a potential rail bypass around the downtown, but said the Agency of Transportation (VTrans) was prepared to make some concessions to the community to replace two key rail bridges that she warned have been deteriorating for at least the past 25 years.

Swimming holes bring relief, ire in summer

BRANDON — Ginger Gould, who grew up in Forest Dale and still lives there, says there’s nothing better than a refreshing dip in a cool Vermont stream on a hot summer’s day. Kids walk from up to a mile away on the hot pavement to take a dip near her home in the shallow pool in the Neshobe River created by a cluster of rocks just off of Route 73 in Brandon.

“They’ve been doing it for as long as the river’s been there, and that’s fine with me,” Gould said.

New Middlebury municipal building and town gym take shape

By John Flowers

TownOffice8858.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Fifteen months ago, Middlebury’s municipal building and recreation facility projects were simply controversial lines on paper. It took a second public vote of 880 to 714 in May of 2014 to affirm the $6.5 million undertaking, which had stirred up more intense debate than the town had seen since a controversial Price Chopper Supermarket proposal two decades earlier.

Fast forward to this past Monday.

World War II veteran took aim at Nazis

Zues with plane.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — We should all have a nickname like Nathan Zuses.

The World War II veteran goes by “Zues,” pronounced the same as “Zeus,” the mythical Greek God of the sky, lightning, thunder, law, order and justice.

Seventy years ago, Zues, as he likes to be known, was toting a 50-caliber machine gun through the Ardennes region in Belgium as part of a U.S. Army anti-aircraft unit fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.
