VERMONT — When Gene Nolette, owner of Leicester-based Gene’s Property Management, went to buy the popular fertilizer mix “10-10-10” for lawn application this month, he was surprised to find that he wasn’t able to.

The fertilizer, aptly labeled for its three main nutrients, is comprised of 10 percent nitrogen, 10 percent phosphorus and 10 percent potassium. But a Legislative act passed in 2011, which took effect Jan. 1, has outlawed the application of phosphorus fertilizers on lawns, with a few exceptions.

ACSU retains interim chief another year

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) Superintendent Gail Conley, who has been serving on an interim basis since last July 1, has agreed to serve another year in order to give a search committee more time to find his replacement.

An ACSU search committee has thus far initiated two ill-fated searches for a new superintendent. Those searches yielded relatively few applications from what is a shrinking pool nationwide of qualified education administrators. In both cases, the search committee did not feel it could advance a finalist for the job.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College President Emeritus John McCardell Jr. is settling in well in his new position as chancellor and president of Sewanee: The University of the South.

McCardell and his wife, Bonnie, returned together to Middlebury this month for the first time in almost two years. It was quite a homecoming for McCardell, who joined the history faculty at Middlebury in 1976 and served as the college’s president from 1992 to 2004.

FERRISBURGH — A part of the nation’s history — or at least a fanciful version of a local legend — will come to life at Ferrisburgh Central School on Friday morning.

At 10:30 a.m., the 17 members of kindergarten teacher Josh Brooks’ class will present their version of how American Commodore Thomas MacDonough outfoxed the British at the mouth of Otter Creek.

In the pupils’ short play, MacDonough receives help from, among others, a fictional farm boy, George Washington, and Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys.

BRISTOL — The Vermont Public Service Board has given the green light to a major methane-to-electricity facility at one of the county’s largest dairy farms.

It was this past Jan. 6 that Four Hills Farm requested a certificate of public good from the Public Service Board to install and operate a 525kW methane electrical generating facility at its 722 Burpee Road headquarters in Bristol. Four Hills has 2,500 head of cattle, around 1,250 of which are currently being milked.
