ORWELL — Two thousand five hundred turkeys gobble as they mill about in one of Stonewood Farm’s eight massive turkey barns. Up in front is a pen of huge critters that will each yield a 50-pound bird, once roasted. Imagine that on your Thanksgiving table (and the oven that could hold it!).

A little over a week before Thanksgiving, Orwell’s Stonewood Farm is going full speed, close to 12 hours a day, seven days a week to process the 22,000 birds raised for this year’s Turkey Day.

MIDDLEBURY — A Salisbury farm will soon be turning on-site cow manure and Addison County food waste into renewable energy that will push Middlebury College’s campus beyond its goal of carbon neutrality.

The Goodrich Farm will host a Farm Powered-brand anaerobic digester that will, on a daily basis, process 100 tons of manure from the 900-cow farm off Shard Villa Road and 165 tons of organic food waste per day from some of the Middlebury area’s biggest organizations, including the Agri-Mark/Cabot cheese making plant in Middlebury.

When you walk into your home what does it feel like? Are you overwhelmed by the piles of shoes in the doorway, laundry heaped in the corner, dishes stacked in the sink and monster dust bunnies hiding all over the place? Those pesky cosmetic things, that with a good cleaning will disappear to reveal your beautiful, well-designed and thought-out living space? Or, perhaps it feels more like no matter how much cleaning you do, the space is just dysfunctional, poorly designed and frustrating?

Rifle deer season opens with bang-up weekend; big numbers build on youth, bow results

deer hunters.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — Area deer hunters enjoyed the second best opening weekend of rifle season since 2005, bringing 242 bucks to an Addison County weigh station on this past Nov. 11 or 12.

That total of deer taken came just seven short of 2016’s opening weekend kill of 249. That total was the best opening weekend result since Vermont wildlife officials in 2005 banned the taking of spikehorn bucks during November’s 16-day rifle season, the most popular of the state’s deer hunting seasons.
