Editor’s note: If change is good, we had plenty of it in Addison County over the past 12 months. Faces came and went, news stories flamed up and died out (and some of them will follow us into the new year). 2018 was quite a year on many fronts. Relive some of those memories in this round up of the year that’s ending and then brace yourself... and have a wonderful 2019.

JANUARY

The new year and the county’s first baby of 2018 did not quite arrive simultaneously: Kai Spaulding Lewia was born at Porter Hospital on Jan. 2.

NEW HAVEN — Sometimes the miracle of love’s persistence shines most brightly when it emerges from the anguish of a broken heart.

Linda Sweeney’s heart broke last February when her beloved husband, Michael, died unexpectedly. From grief’s dark and timeless depths she struggled to envision a world without him. Day by day, piece by piece — though she at times felt like an “unwilling architect” — she began to rebuild her life.

Along the way she has wrought a miracle.

MIDDLEBURY — The calendar.

A simple measure of the passage of time and a marker for special days.

But the calendar, for Kris Francoeur, can be a foreboding benchmark that reaches its gloomy climax in October. That’s the month during which her son, Sam, tragically drew his last breath following an accidental drug overdose.

BestNight-2932.jpg

BRISTOL — Bristol Best Night organizers ordered 400 buttons for this year’s New Year’s Eve event. Then they ordered some more, just in case.

It’s going to be epic.

“This year, especially given the lack of New Year’s Eve activities in Burlington, we decided to increase our focus on the final act, with dancing until 11 p.m. with the Starline Rhythm Boys,” said Best Night organizer Eric Warren.

MIDDLEBURY — Two 14-year-old Middlebury Union Middle School students have been indefinitely pulled from classes and face juvenile court citations after allegedly cooperating on a plan to shoot another student, and possibly others, on campus on Tuesday, Dec. 18.

Middlebury police are still investigating the case and are withholding the names of the two suspects because they are both juveniles. They are also not disclosing the names of the alleged target(s) in this case, nor the identity of a heroic student who tipped off adults about the alleged shooting plot.

ADDISON COUNTY — The year 2017 saw a record of 1,189 deer weighed in Addison County for all seasons combined since 2005, when Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department officials banned shooting spikehorn bucks during November rifle season, thus knocking down the numbers taken in the most popular season.

The record didn’t last long. Hunters smashed it this year, and did so for the third straight season.

LINCOLN — Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start with an artist who’s been painting for more than 50 years. Especially an artist like Kathleen Kolb, whose work is so subtly refined and elegant it feels effortless and natural. But here’s the dirty little secret… it’s not. It’s still hard work; beloved work, yes, but work nonetheless.

So we’ll start at the very beginning — a very good place to start.
