School board ballots expand in response to Act 46

Posted on January 14, 2016 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury-area voters will see a lot more names than usual on their Town Meeting Day ballots this year. That’s because the Addison Central Supervisory Union is pursuing a unified school district under Act 46, which means a brand new, 13-member school board will need to be elected. And that’s in addition to positions on the current elementary and UD-3 school boards that will have to be filled to ensure a smooth transition for the new panel.

By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board on Monday adopted a $10,026,000 budget proposal for the 2016-2017 school year that represents a 2.23 percent spending cut from current spending.

In what Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Superintendent JoAn Canning on Tuesday called an oversight during a lengthy budget discussion, the board did not take up a separate $100,000 capital fund article.

'Team Vt.' brings aid to Syrian refugees

LINCOLN — “We didn’t sleep very much,” says Mari Cordes of her recent week on the Greek island of Lesvos.

No, it was not a winter vacation in search of the sun. The Lincoln resident went to Greece to provide humanitarian and medical aid to refugees from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, who continue to arrive by the thousands, often on dangerously overcrowded inflatable dinghies, drenched and shivering as they flee their war-torn homelands.

“On an average day, there were thousands of refugees coming ashore,” said Cordes.

Painting and poetry shed light on forest work

Posted on January 14, 2016 |
By JULIA JOHN

KolbPainting3350.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Lincoln artist Kathleen Kolb has been painting enchantingly radiant, realistic scenes of local forestry for two decades. Three summers ago, when Kolb shared her work with Vermont poet Verandah Porche, her longtime friend and former colleague at the Governor’s Institute on the Arts, the writer suggested they collaborate. So Porche spent last spring conversing and writing verses with foresters featured in Kolb’s paintings, complementing their visual depiction with words.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College ice hockey fans will face a different sort of challenge this weekend.

As the men’s team faces off against longtime rival Plattsburgh State in Chip Kenyon Arena this Friday evening and the Panther women take on Endicott College on Saturday afternoon, fans will be challenged to improve their performance on a somewhat obscure but nonetheless very important statistic: the sort.

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Agency of Transportation officials planning the replacement of Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges confirm that a related parking garage and the relocation of a public transit bus stop will be covered under the estimated $40 million project budget, but no funds are being earmarked for assisting local merchants who might lose business during construction.

State to consider scaling back Midd RR bridges plan

Posted on January 11, 2016 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Transportation Secretary Chris Cole has asked the Vermont Rail Council to weigh in on the notion of lowering the minimum clearance requirement for Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges from 21 feet to 19 feet.

It’s a move that — if approved by the Legislature — could substantially reduce the duration, cost and inconvenience of what is currently a $40 million plan to replace the spans during what could be a four-year work schedule.

Map sparks questions on surge of solar arrays

ADDISON COUNTY — Ellen Kurrelmeyer looked warily at a stack of applications for new solar power development in Addison County. The Addison County Regional Planning Commission member also considered a map produced by Green Mountain Power that shows power lines in the county are stretched thin by a number of solar arrays already here.

“So are you trying to tell me that we shouldn’t be seeing more heaps of these” applications, Kurrelmeyer asked two GMP officials who came to a planning commission meeting last Thursday to explain the map.

MIDDLEBURY — Pierre Vachon loves bad movies. The body piercer, professional wrestler, voice-over artist and actor enjoys everything from their cringe-worthy acting to overdone special effects to lame story line. But most of all, he enjoys laughing at them.

“I love film train wrecks,” said Vachon, whose day job is at Frog Alley Tattoo and Leatherworks in Middlebury. “Because people actually went into it thinking they were making something good. It’s so bad I have to figure out where they went wrong.”

Systems reliability at issue in New Haven's PSB hearing this week

CindyHill0323.jpg

NEW HAVEN — The Public Service Board on Tuesday will hear from both the town of New Haven and Green Mountain Power, as to whether local power distribution lines are adequate to handle a 350 kW solar array proposed to be built next to the Vermont State Police barracks in New Haven.

The proposed solar array, called SSE New Haven Solar II, would be built next to a 150 kW solar array already in operation in the same location. The developer applied for permission to build the new array in March 2015.
