Changes await pupils at MUHS, MUMS

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury-area middle- and high-school students will return to classes on Wednesday to find some new teachers and new campus improvements.

Middlebury Union Middle School Interim Principal Patrick Reen anticipates an incoming 2012-2013 class of 311 students for grades 7 and 8. That’s the most enrollees at the school since 2007-2008, he noted, and the largest seventh-grade class since 2002-2003.

Addison woman got support in cancer battle

WEST ADDISON — By definition a survivor is one who endures adverse or unusual circumstances. That is a description that Helen Kahrs, 78, of West Addison, fits perfectly.

First diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2005, and then hit by a second cancer diagnosis five years later, today Kahrs can happily say that she is a true survivor after years of battling cancer.

Tax bills on the way to Panton property owners

PANTON — Many, but not necessarily all, Panton homeowners should see lower tax bills when they open the envelopes this week, according to town treasurer M’Lissa Dayton.

Because Panton has just completed a town-wide reappraisal and individual assessments have changed, Dayton said maybe not all taxpayers will see bills asking for lower payments, half of which are due on Nov. 1 and May 1, respectively. 

“They (the results) will vary, and you will be getting them shortly,” she said.

Former U.S. diplomat shares views on Russia

MIDDLEBURY — John R. Beyrle logged thousands of miles over three decades before and during his tenure as U.S. ambassador to Russia. And it was a journey that came full circle on Aug. 17 at Middlebury College, where Beyrle delivered the commencement address for the conclusion of the Middlebury Language Schools’ 98th summer session.

Beyrle, 58, studied Russian during the summer of 1975 at the Middlebury Russian School, and he credited that experience for helping lead him toward a career in foreign diplomacy.

Voters go to polls on Tuesday for Primary election

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermonters will go to the polls on Tuesday, Aug. 28, to cast ballots in primary elections highlighted by a heated contest between two Burlington Democrats vying for attorney general.

That contest features longtime incumbent Attorney General Bill Sorrell, who is being challenged by Chittenden County State’s Attorney Thomas “T.J.” Donovan. The winner of that race will go on to face Republican candidate Jack McMullen in the General Election this November.

Aldermen discuss sites, cost of new city police station

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday crossed a couple potential sites for a new police station off their list, but also discussed two new possibilities and addressed a station’s potential cost.

Taken off the list at the recommendation of the council’s police station committee were two properties on North Main Street, the Kennedy Brothers building and a 14-acre parcel owned by Vermont Industrial Parks, a subsidiary of Carrara & Sons Inc.

Field Days a hit in spite of showers, Route 17 repairs

NEW HAVEN — Addison County Fair and Field Days drew to a close on Aug. 11 following another run that officials called a success in spite of some rain that drenched the site during portions of three days of the annual event’s five-day span.

Jim Foster, president of the Field Days board, estimated attendance at this year’s 64th annual Field Days was around 15 percent lower than last year’s edition. During a good year (like last year), Field Days draws between 25,000 to 30,000 visits, according to Foster.
