Posted on September 20, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 school board on Tuesday got a glimpse of how the Middlebury-area student population is performing under current state and local measuring sticks — and got a preview of how students will be gauged under a new, national assessment program that will be in place come 2015.

At issue is the “Common Core State Standards (CCSS)” system that within three years will supplant Vermont’s current standardized testing for students through the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP).

MIDDLEBURY — Entrepreneur Paul Ralston has always had a burning desire to try his hand at businesses that depend on fire. To wit, heat has been an essential ingredient at the Bristol Bakery (which he founded) and at his current, growing venture, the Vermont Coffee Company, where the roasting of beans exudes an intoxicating aroma at its headquarters on Middlebury’s Exchange Street.

SUDBURY — A fund has been established at a local bank to help the family of a local man stricken with Eastern equine encephalitis who was hospitalized and remains in critical condition.

The Scott Sgorbati Family Aid Fund was established Sept. 7 at the National Bank of Middlebury to help the family of Sgorbati, one of two local men to contract EEE last month as the first human cases in the state. The other man, 87-year-old Richard Breen of Brandon, died of the disease on Sept. 4.

ST. ALBANS — Despite his wealth and Harvard degrees, Jack McMullen says he came from humble origins.

McMullen is the Republican challenger to Democratic Attorney General William Sorrell in this November’s General Election.

McMullen’s father suffered rheumatic fever as a child, leaving him with fragile health throughout his life. As one of five children, McMullen, who is from Long Island, went to work at 11.

“Our family was — what’s the technical term — poor,” said McMullen.

ADDISON COUNTY — Every orchard agrees: The story of this year’s harvest started in the spring.

“It got too hot too soon,” said Bob Douglas, the co-owner of Douglas Orchards in Shoreham, of the unusual warm spell that hit around St. Patrick’s Day. “Everything blossomed early. But the frost still came along when it always does, and killed those blossoms.”

And while Douglas’s crop is going to come in below average, other Addison County orchards are expecting a decent year.

Posted on September 13, 2012 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday heard a suggestion from its town office steering committee that town officials might want to aim a little lower in designing a municipal office building.

The board also talked about capping taxpayers’ contribution to funding a new building at a 2-cent increase to the Middlebury’s tax rate, which officials said would raise about $2 million toward its cost over the length of a bond.

BRISTOL — Not many Vermonters can still recall the days when their town’s roads were unpaved, ice was cut and stored in sawdust-lined containers until summer time, and eggs were commonly known as “hen fruit.”

But Gertrude Lathrop can. The lifelong Bristol resident will mark her 100th birthday on Oct. 13.

“It was very different,” she said, recalling how the town looked in her childhood. “The streets have changed. The buildings have changed.”
