Bristol clinic lands $812,500 grant to expand service to the needy

BRISTOL — A six-figure federal grant announced last week will enable a Bristol medical clinic to expand its services, particularly to low- and moderate-income residents in Addison County.

The Five Town Health Alliance was awarded $812,500, which will be put toward expanding services at the Mountain Health Center in BristolWorks complex. It was one of three practices in Vermont that were designated as “community health centers.”

Temporary bridge on Route 116 in Bristol open to two-way traffic

BRISTOL — Workers from J.H. McDonald Co. of Lyndonville moved closer to completing a temporary bridge across the New Haven River at Sycamore Park in Bristol late last month, when this photo was taken by Peter Grant. By late last week the span was pretty much ready to go, Bristol Town Administrator Bill Bryant said on Thursday. By Friday, with the asphalt was down, it was open to two-way traffic.

Gateway to Bristol' project gains ground

BRISTOL — The Vermont Land Trust has teamed up with local supporters and members of the Bristol Conservation Commission to protect the scenic corridor north of Bristol on Route 116. The “Gateway to Bristol” project is moving toward a successful outcome and conservation easements will be placed on 687 acres of farm fields and woodlands in early 2014.

Middlebury petition to force vote on town office and gym proposal

MIDDLEBURY — Former Middlebury selectboard Chairman John Tenny will help lead a citizens’ petition drive to ensure the 2014 Town Meeting Day ballot includes a bond vote for a new municipal building and a new recreation center.

Tenny announced the petition drive at a Middlebury selectboard meeting on Tuesday evening prior to the board’s revote on a term sheet between the town and Middlebury College outlining a town-gown collaboration on the two building projects.

Film puts spotlight on Vermont prescription drug problem

ADDISON COUNTY — The screening in Addison County next week of a new documentary about prescription drug addiction in Vermont will shine a light on a growing problem that many would just as soon not see.

“Prescription drug abuse is an epidemic in Vermont — the governor said so,” said Bess O’Brien, who produced the new documentary “The Hungry Heart.” “I want to create a level of consciousness of the issue, to get the community engaged.”

Iconic church eyes $2.6m in upgrades

MIDDLEBURY — Members of the Congregational Church of Middlebury a few years ago celebrated the 200th birthday of their picturesque place of worship at the top of Main Street. The flock is now seeking to prepare the church for its next 200 years with a $2.6 million capital improvement plan that includes repairing the front steps, upgrading the kitchen and placing a classroom addition onto the north side of the majestic building.

Beloved lunch lady hangs up her spatula

STARKSBORO — In 1965, Lyndon Johnson was president, Apollo 11 had yet to land on the moon, a first-class stamp cost a nickel and a gallon of gas 31 cents.

It was also the year Joyce Shepard started working as a cook at Starksboro’s Robinson Elementary School. She retired in this past summer, after 48 years.

“I just liked working with the kids,” Shepard said. “It kept me young.”

Principal Patrick Hartnett likened Shepard’s tenure to that of a baseball Hall of Famer.

New farm bill has glimmer of hope

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A cohort of legislators met in the capitol Wednesday in an attempt to find common ground on a new farm bill. But they made no real progress toward resolving differences between the U.S. Senate and House over legislation that covers a range of programs that affect dairy farmers, those who get food assistance and other Vermonters.
